Damn, this one got me. Very poignant and moving. And funny! What an ending.
The ending didn't quite hit me the way it did others because... Well, I won't spoil anything, just because. I talked about it in real time with my wife and she totally understood, but she disagreed. The ending wrecked her both times she watched it.

Basically, it was a suspension of disbelief issue. We'd been told that he was days away from death, he's in hospice care, cancer had ravaged his body.... But Jay O. Sanders looked healthy as an ox. And once he started walking and drinking and monologuing, it took everything in my power not to check out. So when they reveal that it's his imagination, I was just like "oh thank God because that was gonna piss me off otherwise." So, it didn't have the impact for me emotionally but I loved it intellectually. Very cool choice. Upon rewatch I think it'll hit harder.

I had similar thoughts as it was playing out. But the gradual, gut-punch of a realization of what was probably actually happening was very effective for me. And then once we got the actual, visual confirmation of "yes, that is what is actually happening"...forget about it!

Mrs Wease works with hospice patients and families. She said
that was very common with hospice patients. They’ll have one last burst of energy, lucidity, whatever and then they usually die the next day or sooner.
She said the movie as a whole was very well done and true to life. We both thought it was wonderful even if the ending was so predictable.

It felt creatively vapid/ unentertaining. I was so bored throughout nearly the entire movie. What did you get out of it?
To me it was so funny! I laughed a lot. And it's also a very well executed and very interesting treatise on control and obsession, with some great acting. It could also be that I am overjoyed to love a Lanthimos movie after the dreadful Poor Things
