Someone please tell me about Pence. I think i heard during the campaign he was something of a Nazi in his political views? But i dont know much of anything about him. How terrible would it be if he takes office?

He's a tool, but I doubt the plan is to give him much. If they can get the agenda passed under Trump and then stand by while he's removed, Pence can focus on repairing relationships and look like the classic statesman...thus calming voters and repairing the GOP's chances in 2020.

Hence the increasing effort to protect him from having to do much to defend his boss

1. Get the agenda pushed through
2. Keep the fallout of all this limited to the WH
3. Don't let the Democrats come out of this looking like heroes
4. Don't look like they helped bring down a president popular with their base

Items 3 and 4 represent the fine line that they are testing now. "How do we allow this to happen, not get hurt by it, and even use it to rally the base in 2018?"
This is why I think that if they're going to do it, they need to do it sooner rather than later. It's a long way between now and November 2018, the more time they can get to make people forget about this. Contrast this to Nixon: he resigned in August 1974 and then Ford blundered by pardoning him the next month. Two months later, with all this still fresh in mind, the GOP got crushed.

I agree that if Trump resigns or is removed you can forget about any legislative agenda moving forward.

And let's not make the assumption that Pence comes out of this squeaky clean either.

He won't have dinner with a woman unless his wife is present. That ought to start you (and anyone else) off enraged. But he's a pretty standard Republican, he'd sign anything a favorable Congress passes his way.

I don't think at present it's likely trump gets impeached, but this guy is a funhouse of wildly unpredictable behavior so it could become a more credible outcome in the coming months, i was just trying to get some idea of what that leaves us with for an administration. VPs are traditionally nonstarters, and one of the reasons they get chosen for running mates, imo, but the country has become so much more rightwing lunatic leaning i dont know how it would play out. I doubt any better than now, but i worry about it being worse...

He also calls his wife "Mother."

"The President Show" did a Psycho parody last week, but centered on Trump, not Pence.

I just can't see the Republicans to agree on impeachment proceedings; I think they will (perhaps correctly) view that as being such a black eye they will not be able to recover by 2018 or 2020, even if it happens within the next few months. Couple that with the fact that Republican support for Trump is still in the high 80s or 90s and is unlikely to go down anytime soon. Republicans like Ryan have good reason to believe those voters are more loyal to Trump than GOPers in Congress. I think there's no way impeachment happens, no matter what is found out.

To be clear, I don't think there's any way Trump gets thrown out of office, either. I'm operating more on the "should" angle.

"No politician has been treated worse or as unfairly as me" - Man whose entire political career is built on a foundation of a racist smear campaign he orchestrated against the first black President.

I relish the thought of a GOP-supported impeachment. Trump would dig in his heels, the fight would get ugly, everyone on that side of the aisle would come out covered in shit. The big question is would it be worth the collateral damage to the rest of the world? Meaning, while they're rolling around in the much with each other, there would certainly be other social/humanitarian situations that would lose the support of the US gov't.

The messaging and the timing are the concern. There's a reason Jason "self serve" Chaffetz of Fox News fame wanted to be first to push for the memos: it's a win-win. If the memos can be dismissed, then he helped expose it. If they are damning, then in the "Trump hoodwinked America" storyline (or in the "Trump was a great visionary who succumbed to illness and we subsequently saved everyone" version), he is a Republucan hero. Great starting place for a right wing tv program.

If the Dems somehow win the special election in Montana next week, you better believe the GOP is going to be running to start impeachment. Get it over with ASAP so some of the stink can wear off by fall 2018 and President Pence has time to notch some legislative accomplishments with this endangered Congressional majority.
