I'd say this is rather comfortably my least favorite QOTSA.

Tail, God, SS and possibly FF are the lesser tracks on this album. The other 6 are top shelf.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: FF is the only bad QOTSA song.

na, I'd say FF is underrated if anything. good lyrics at least.

Who cares when you have to sit through that obnoxious mess of a song to hear them

I love LC and appreciate the genesis of Fairweather Friends, it's very representative of how the whole record was pulled together:
Another equally out of the box choice for ‘…Like Clockwork’ was Elton John. The legendary piano player approached Queens Of The Stone Age about working together, and was immediately offered a spot in the studio. With his weight of experience and musicianship (there’s more to Elton than crazy glasses, y’know…) an unusual partnership was born. “It seemed like when Elton showed up and we did this track together things seemed to kinda click,” the guitarist muses. “Especially on that session. I mean, he didn’t know what he was walking into and we didn’t know what we were going to expect from him. He expected to come and play on a ballad, which we’d already recorded, because that’s what he does a lot of the time. But no, we threw him in the tracking room with us and made a rock ‘n’ roll song!’

Not that Elton John was without the odd diva moment. “He actually got mad at one point, because we didn’t really give him the easiest song – there were a lot of changes,” explains Van Leeuwen. “We were very impressed with how quick he learned all the changes. He got frustrated at one moment and that was kind of cool to see, because we were very frustrated all the time. There was definitely a triumphant high-fiving at the end of that day, and I think that was one of the good times.”

Discussing 'Fairweather Friends', the track they recorded together, Homme continued: "He called me on the phone and it took me a minute to work out if I was being punked or not. He came in and we tracked a rock song live together, which was a wonderful experience. That is what collaboration is all about, learning something from someone else and about someone else and maybe reminding them of something they enjoy too. To experience that with Elton was wonderful. There are piano-based, mellower songs on our record but that's not really the point. It's about strange chemistry and doing what you're not supposed to do."

"The funny thing is he called me. It was a Sunday and I was at home with my son. The phone rings. 'Josh, Elton John here.' At first, I thought it was somebody f--king with me. He told me the only thing my band was missing was a real queen. I said, 'Honey, you've no idea.'" He continued: "He walked in and was like 'do you have a ballad for me?' And I was like 'no, we're playing a rock song, you're joining our band for the day.' "We played for three and half hours. That's how long it took to get it. Then he stayed for another three and half hours and he just talked and hung out."

seems like elton john didn't really make much of a contribution to the song.

As a listener that's not really all that important to me.

Last time I listened to ...LC, which was admittedly some time ago, I remember thinking Fairweather Friends was the best thing on it by a mile.

Just the fact that they collaborated and learned from each other is enough for me. The ratio of Queens:Elton in the finished product is of little consequence.

After a long break, I've been listening to these guys a lot recently. Man, they have some of the best guitar tones.
