I agree, I can’t see any common thread between S/T (which had some very thoughtfully composed songs) and this.

When they write songs like this they're just another band.

I never felt Breakerfall had "balls", it was always just fine in its place on the album

On a headphone listen after a wine and other, i have a few more random observations. I appreciate how ed is mixed in, and how his mid/low range is present. I also like how they didn't try too hard to make it epic like lightning bolt the song, when they really could have. It seems like they didn't overthink it, or try too hard.

The band doesn't really ever seem to come together though. (like the end of breakerfall which people are comparing it too for some reason). The guitars are grittier than recent albums, but it still sound a bit PJ lite.
I'm still rating it a 2/5. but it could easily be a 3. Its a song that is designed for me to like it, but it fails in a few aspects. My opinions of this song are a bit of a contradiction, but so is the song.

I just woke up (EU) 2 hours ago and have listened to it a couple of times.
At first it didn't do much for me, but the last PJ single I've instantly liked was 'I am Mine' so...

I has some garage Strokes vibes, which they have tried before on BS. But this sounds better.
Clearly not as good as DotC but still an entertaining song, we will never get the old PJ back.
But as this stage of their career all I wanted was something different from them.
Superblood sure is different. It's not using complicated chords or beats. But it is experimenting with structure.
