true story: when i thought of a "dull" PJ song, the first one that came to mind was SoS but it's only because i really hate the arrangements on this one. the song itself isn't dull.

I see. It's interesting that the band has such a huge fanbase and enough songs that people like them for different reasons. I'm totally into the more jammy stuff. What would you say are a few of your favorite songs of theirs? I'm just curious to get an idea of your musical tastes.

I'm with you on this one. I remember when I heard the (acoustic?) demo for SoS, and I thought to myself, "Man, this sounds great." Then they gave it the full band treatment and it got about 800% worse. That arrangement sounds borderline inept to me.

I don't think it's that I *prefer* their less jammy stuff. I just think a song is a good song, whether it's got a jam or not, and the inclusion of a jam doesn't lift it from being a good song to a great song for me. Other aspects do. A jam is actually going to be more likely to diminish a song's quality if I see it as unnecessary. So, for example, I took a long time to adjust to loooong jam sections in the middle of RVM. The best version of that song is the album version, where the jam is just long enough to keep the song from getting boring. An example of a jam that *does* work is the change to the fast pace on Present Tense's outro, on the album version. *That* kind of long jam at the end is the kind of thing they could extend live, and I'd be happy. Maybe the outro is a good place for a jam? I don't know. I just like a tightly structured song, I guess. There are always exceptions. Crazy Mary is totally enhanced by all of Boom's playing with his organ. (There's no way of writing that without it sounding funny.) Pearl Jam always had a big classic rock underpinning to their sound, and while I respect that, and I know that it's attracted probably a majority of fans, for me it was the 'alternative' and harder edge which attracted me to Pearl Jam. I like some classic rock fine, a bit of it a lot, but I was never a huge fan of the indulgent guitar solo like some. I never liked Guns 'n Roses and stuff like that. It's why Mike has always been a dispensable part of the band for me (sorry Mike!) but Stone was essential. In fact, it's nice to hear Stone riffing again on MYM, even if this riff is... not as good as they were.

That's so well put. I totally agree. I really dislike the live RVM jams. Insignificance, to me, is a good example of that type of jam working in the middle of the song. I still think Unemployable could have benefited from a longer middle jam. Agree about Mike and Stone, but I like that Stone's riffs, these days, are more about finding interesting chord progressions and rhythms.

I feel like I don't need to post here any more cause we seem to mostly agree, and you're a bit more eloquent in your posts than I am.

Very Zeppelin-ish, with hints of Soundgarden, and maybe some Pink Floyd (but not as much Pink Floyd as some people would like). It brings back memories of Garden, Sleight of Hand, Nothing As It Seems, and Gone. Strings may exist amongst the Stone and Jeff interplay. No discernible lyrics, but Ed sounds good. Sounds like a great song on a D-/F quality recording.
