I think we might have noticed that the rest of the world was shutting down. Hard to believe every country tanked its economy on purpose, for no reason. And some states are forcing people back with this "voluntary quit" rule, taking away unemployment. So no, many have no choice.

Mickey, does it feel good to just be an insufferable prick for no reason?
Your question aside as that's a whole different discussion...
You do see how loaded those words you posted are, right? And how saying things like:
unwarranted fear and panic
whine and complain
sit in your house watching TV, swallowing the panic narrative, and hoarding toilet paper
basically betray the goodwill and empathy you expressed toward me just a few posts back? Come on man, you should be able to express your opinion on things without resorting to veiled (and not-so-veiled) insults.

I dunno man, as others have pointed out, you're the one advancing bad-faith arguments here and lumping all calls for public health measures into the blanket dismissal of "government overreach" so I'd say "no reason" is a bit overstated, maybe that's just me though!

The below link from fox news is for you. --Corona is also causing strokes in people who are in their 20s, 30s, 40s,.
The reason corona is so serious is that doctors still don't know the full scope of damage it could do. It's causing Kawasaki disease in kids under 10 also.
So while many people will survive it, not everyone comes out unscathed. There are 30-year olds who cant walk or talk again.
The medical community never had this virus before so everything they are learning from it is real time and still yet to show itself.
There is no research pool that they can rely on . So the world IS reacting appropriately so

I'll also note that the ability to rationalize stay-at-home orders to protect the most vulnerable as "government overreach" but being unwilling to consider mandatory re-opening which automatically kicks vulnerable workers off unemployment and forces them back to their jobs before it is demonstrably safe to do so as a parallel form of "overreach" is....well, it's something.

These aren’t my words, but I generally agree with the sentiment.
Does it make you feel safer knowing that your unwarranted fear and panic are costing others their livelihoods and even their own lives?
Each time you whine and complain about keeping the country shut down, remember what it's costing OTHER people for you to sit in your house watching TV, swallowing the panic narrative, and hoarding toilet paper.

Look, people can think what they want. I'm wholly sympathetic to the costs of what this is going to be. But I just have to be honest and say that to believe the bolded is utterly delusional. Now, maybe you don't agree with this particular part, but to act like this is a run of the mill event flies in the face of everything we know about this virus.
For comparison, if this was really like a typical flu (with an average fatality rate of 0.1%), in New York State, 18.2 million people will need to have caught the coronavirus; only 19.4 million people live in the state. In New York City, 13.1 million would needed to have caught the virus for the death toll to be comparable to the flu. The city only has a population of 8.4 million.

Just another normal day of watching bodies pile up in freezer trucks outside my local hospital, as they do every April in New York City.

Yea this is an incredible thought exercise for some.
Vail resorts got a ton of shit because they ended up firing a good chunk of their seasonal employers at the start of this. Turns out, it was so they could all collect unemployment and was actually the best thing they could do for those workers at the time.

My grandparents were always going to die but I'm not less mad if they're hit by a drunk driver.
We also don't have a full grasp of recovery from the virus yet. If you live but its with reduced lung capacity and a host of increased health risks for the future, that's still very bad!
To say nothing of the fact that it now looks like COVID can cause sudden strokes in younger people--which, in addition to suggesting that we're still undercounting deaths, is uhh pretty bad!
Can confirm

Boy am I glad I live in a socially responsible democratic country.
My government is doing all it can to help those in need, employers and employees both, so no one has to choose between work or possibly death.
Sure, we'll feel the financial pain for awhile but we'll be alive.

And no, fuck that.
If my friends mom who is healthy and no pre existing conditions, suddenly ended up at the hospital on a ventilator for two weeks, then my sister in law got sick, my girlfriend, my boss's wife all got sick, a friends husband died, and 6 other locals in town here all fucking died within a matter of weeks.
I WOULD FUCKING KNOW THIS IS SERIOUS SHIT.
People are really struggling with all of this because they are realizing that life isn't about them.

The media told us to be afraid? I seem to remember quite a few press conferences from your president where he was also telling us to be careful, shelter in place, etc. And he doesn't listen to the fake news!
