Y'all posting that map got me to go on a major lore-reading kick last night, and this world is pretty cool. I love the Doom of Valyria as an origin for a lot of the modern history as well as rarer items like Valyrian steel.

Some day I'll sit down and really try to understand the origins/lore/history of some of this stuff. But right now I'm just too invested in what happens next to the people I've learned to love (and hate).

There's a podcast on howl called hardcore game of Thrones that does a good job covering a lot of the back story. It's a parody of hardcore history, but that doesn't really matter.
