I've only read Paris Nocturne and The Black Notebook by Modiano. But I like both and have been trying to figure out where to go next.

That's so funny. A detail like that would really stick out and be a defining detail in almost any other book. In this it just flows over you and you're on to the next thing. It's such a minor and insignificant detail, a wispy rumor, and nowhere near as awful as most of what happens.

That's so funny. A detail like that would really stick out and be a defining detail in almost any other book. In this it just flows over you and you're on to the next thing. It's such a minor and insignificant detail, a wispy rumor, and nowhere near as awful as most of what happens.

Interesting, for me that was by far the most stomach-churning detail outside of the....entire Norma chapter

I highly recommend Suspended Sentences, I loved that book.

I think it's the whole unreliable narrator thing, coupled with the larger themes surrounding toxic masculinity and machismo, that made that part (the tamales) feel like a lie or a wild rumor, something that could be dismissed as untrue. Whereas most of the rest of the horrid shit that happens is harder to dismiss because even though no POV is particularly reliable, they overlap and expand on each other in ways that made me believe them.

It's dogs and cats in the tamales, not people. Or whatever. But the Norma stuff... it can't be dismissed. Or I couldn't dismiss any of it or rationalize any of it.

I love art. I love how different people react to and participate in a given piece of art. It's so fucking cool that we each experience these details, colors and contours differently.

I remember B was really affected by a detail in the latest Chuck Palahnuik book. And it didn't faze me at all. Like the tamales, I read over it and didn't "feel" the scene the same way he did. I love how we all bring our biases and experiences to this shit.
