Here are some more:

Winter is coming, and so too is the inevitable end of “Game of Thrones,” although HBO president Michael Lombardo is still hoping to postpone that eventuality for as long as possible.

“‘Seven seasons and out’ has never been the conversation,” Lombardo told reporters during HBO’s presentation at the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour on Thursday. “The question is, how much beyond the seventh season are we going to do?”

According to Lombardo, “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are “feeling like there’s probably two more years after [season] six,” noting that he would “love for them to change their minds, but that’s what we’re looking at right now.”

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are mulling an abbreviated end game that would limit Season 7 to just seven episodes and an eighth and final season to just six episodes.

“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season,” Benioff said in an exclusive interview with sister site Variety. “We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone.”

Ok, so I just watched "The Lion and The Rose" (S04E02) for the first time. I don't know what to say.
Spoiler: show
I'm supremely happy Joffrey is finally dead, and the whole wedding scene was mortifying to watch because of how he behaved before the croked. But I wanted it to be a much slower, more painful death. He was such a prick.

Meh.

We all expected it. It's fine. The episodes will still drop. Everyone will tune it. Some people will love it. Some people will hate it because it defiles the books. There still won't be a sixth book. Life keeps rolling, rolling, rolling along.

Well yeah, I was still holding out hope for one more 10 episode season.

Oh me too. But it seemed clear a long time ago that was never going to happen. After Mad Men and Breaking Bad, I always expect this kind of thing.

Was there another series before Sopranos that did this? Breaking the final "season" over two years of shortened runs?

Sopranos might have been the first major series. I really don't know. But it's pretty common anymore.

I don't view this as breaking the final season into two. It is shortening the final two seasons for budget/filming reasons.

Which is fine. But I feel like, if that's really the case, why not jus cut three hours from the show. Just do one final 10 episode season? You can't tell me that every minute of the next 13 hours of GoT is going to be 100% necessary to get us there. There will be padding. Maybe just make all 10 episodes longer than 60 minutes.

Just seems strange to me. But, hey, I'm obviously not in the writer's room.

They probably make more money this way.

Well, of course they do. That's my entire point, Pete.

I think we underestimate the logistical nightmare it is to make more than 9-10 hours of content of a show of this scale in one year (or slightly more than a year).

I get it. I really do. But again, why 73 hours? Why not 70? Or 71 over one 10 episode season?

The answer: $$$$

And that's the bottom line.

I get it. It's fine. I'll wait. HBO can/will do what they want and I'll still tune in because GRRM still won't have dropped a new fucking book yet. I have no choice. I'm pot commited!

It seems like HBO wanted 20 episodes and the showrunners said 14-15. I may have misread previous articles but it sounded like they are streamlining these final seasons, not extending them.
