Thought you knew what your favorite winter drink is? Wait until you try Greenlandic coffee.

Greenland’s cold weather cure is like an Irish coffee, except more Irish!

And like everything in Greenlandic culture, this lovely mixture comes with a story that’s just as delicious.

The recipe?

Hot coffee is mixed with whiskey, Kahlua and Grand Marnier then covered by an Arctic heap of whipped cream.

The drink is usually served after dinner along with a local legend or a tale about the Inuit people’s closest thing to a deity – the Mother of the Sea.

But the most common story about Greenlandic coffee is that it is “the whole of Greenland in one mug.”

The whiskey is supposed to represent all the “rough” parts of the country: its men, its hunters, its fisherman and its rugged landscape.

Only in Greenland: A beach for skiing and sledding

The Kahlua, all the “nice” things about Greenland; its women, its beautiful scenery and its animals.

The men and the women then come together in the cold, dark polar nights, represented by the hot coffee. The whipped cream on top signifies the icebergs and glaciers the country is famous for.

The Grand Marnier is the finishing touch, set alight before being poured on top, the flames mimicking the Northern Lights.

The drink, like the country itself, is gorgeous at any time of the year.
Sounds amazing.
They also eat putrid shark meat and whale meat.

It's pretty simple. Greenland is a colony. Colonies aren't cool anymore and the people there are starting to understand what they are sitting on, so they are going to look for economic alignment. That means either the US side or the China side. Those are the options. So y'all can get as knickers twisted over Trump all day long but alignment with the US over China is infinitely better for everyone and pushing back on it because of your unending TDS is fucking mental. It's OK for us as citizens to allow Trump to make things better when one of his policies is a legitimately good idea. That's not endorsing White supremacy or fascism. You're not supporting the Handmaiden's Tale. That's just putting the future of the country, and in this case the continent, before bruised egos.

ah yes, my mistake. Wouldn't they have to vote to become a territory? What if they vote no and Trump still wants it?

He's already said that he would use military force if he had to (in order to protect the free world), which is pretty sound logic if you don't think about it.

How is the relationship between Denmark and Greenland, worse than that between the USA and Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico (Spanish for 'rich port'; abbreviated PR), officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a self-governing Caribbean archipelago and island organized as an unincorporated territory of the United States under the designation of commonwealth.

Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat, pronounced [kalaːɬːit nʉnaːt]; Danish: Grønland, is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is the larger of two autonomous territories within the Kingdom, the other being the Faroe Islands; the citizens of both territories are full citizens of Denmark. As Greenland is one of the Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union, citizens of Greenland are European Union citizens.

Claude AI wrote: A colony and a territory have distinct characteristics in terms of governance and relationship to the controlling power, though there can be some overlap in how these terms are used historically.

A colony typically refers to a region or land that is under the complete political and economic control of a foreign power (the colonizer). The colonizing power usually establishes permanent settlements, exploits resources, and imposes its own administrative systems, laws, and often culture on the indigenous population. Colonies were often established through conquest or occupation, with the colonizing power viewing the land and its resources as extensions of their own nation. Historical examples include British India, French Algeria, and the Spanish colonies in the Americas.

A territory, on the other hand, generally refers to a region that has a more autonomous relationship with its governing power. Territories often have their own local governments and some degree of self-rule, though they typically remain under the broader sovereignty of a larger nation. They may not have full independence or statehood, but usually maintain more political rights and autonomy than colonies. Modern examples include U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and Guam, which have their own governments but are under U.S. sovereignty - their residents are U.S. citizens, but they don't have full representation in Congress.

The key distinction lies in the degree of autonomy and self-governance: colonies were typically subject to direct, extensive control by the colonizing power, while territories often maintain more political independence and self-determination, even if they're not fully sovereign states.
