I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

tragabigzanda wrote:ST, what are your thoughts on Lincoln In The Bardo relative to Saunders’s other works? I’m a humongous fan of his short stories, but I’m scared that the novel length and subject matter will make for something uncharacteristically sloggish.
I think the themes and style are very reminiscent of his short stories, so I don't think that will necessarily be off-putting, but it's certainly not breezy like some of his stories. He plays some games with historical sources, too, and I think that was a nice way to keep things fresh with the form. Give it a try.

I 2nd this. First time with this author but Lincoln in the Bardo is great. He really creates an atmosphere to keep you engaged. And the dialogue is great.

Finished On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. It's a tad bloated and uneven in patches but overall lovely and moving.

Now what do I read?

My friend gave me a bag of books. Probably one of those.

Thanks. I wanted something really different from the last book. This is a crime thriller. But was also a finalist for the Booker. Should be fun.
