I just received the Allman Brothers Band 50th anniversary boxset. haven't made it through all ten discs yet but it's great so far and a pretty complete review of their career, getting releases from all their labels over time. It was ridiculously priced to start with but the price finally came down to something reasonable.

I always forget just how much I enjoy this band.

My store sold every copy of Stories From the City.. they had in 4 hours yesterday. Luckily I called ahead & reserved a copy. All of these reissues have sounded fantastic, this one no different. Good lord what an album! Huge hole in the collection filled.

i did go pick stories... up last night. got their last copy of the demos lp, too. then proceeded to spend $150 more.

edit: i suppose i could say what else i got- a sealed zeppelin 'how the west was won' box on sale for $80, filled a collection hole with television's 'marquee moon', got the new colemine records 'brighter days ahead' comp, the red dead redemption II housebuilding ep, and 'deep river and other classic negro spirituals' by robert mcferrin, bobby mcferrin's father and an opera singer.

Yeah it sounds lovely. The dynamic range is really something else, and the stereo spread is great; Big Exit sounds massive. The only bad thing that kind of jumped out at me was the mega tape hiss on You Said Something, I don't remember the CD version having it that bad but I should go back and check.

I was reading today on the Hoffman board that because the rights to Dry were owned by a different label, it was pressed through a different plant, and doesn't quite hold up to the other reissues. What's your opinion on that?

I was also reading that there's speculation her masters were destroyed in the Universal fire (she had apparently had a reissue series that was announced, then was quietly canceled after the fire). And the lack of technical detail on the current reissues seems to support that.

I'll probably plunk down a few hundred bucks for AAA versions of Rid of Me, Stories..., and Uh Huh Her someday. But for now these are sounding great.

I didn't notice anything different in You Said Something on the first couple listens.

Would agree that Dry is different from the others, although I put it down to being a really lo-fi record to begin with so it sounds right to my ears.

So far the biggest improvement from the original versions has been Is This Desire? Always thought the CD was a bit too quiet & thin, and this new version really brings out the full power. Fucking incredible album that finally feels like it's getting its due.

I had always planned to slowly collect original pressings of everything as well (ridiculously rare & expensive of course) but I'm now reconsidering the need for it, other than the OCD collector thing.

About halfway through, this is as advertised. Really looking forward to more re-issues of the '90s stuff. Hopefully the expanded Ragged Glory makes it out this year.
