China would have experienced the same growth rate with or without the great leap forward? Thats quite a claim.

If you intended that to mean political ideologies that are only marginally different, then sure.

The question is really whats the breakdown of the crappy economy being the result of mismanagment versus shitty commodity prices.

I think at this point it's pretty much a waiting game, unfortunately.

The DA and EFF have cut into the ANC's votes this year. If the DA manages to capture Tshwane (Pretoria, very possible), and even Johannesburg (close, but slightly less possible), they'll have the biggest metros.

Then the key is to deliver and use those wards as a base to build in the area.

BUT, as I said, it looks like it's just a case of waiting for the more ANC-sceptical youth vote to become the majority. 2019 will be ANC, but with the possibility of them not winning the Western Cape (Cape Town) and losing Gauteng (Johannesburg & Pretoria) - the two seats of government.

Then if the ANC don't have some kind of party cull and clean themselves up, 2024 is the first real threat.
