As another non-fawning fanboy I can tell you, you're absolutely wrong. This trailer looked beyond fantastic.

I wish I could share your confidence, sir. But, realistically, outside of nostalgia-tickling (which I hate), what in that trailer looks significantly different from trailers for stuff like Oblivion, Ender's Game, Abram's Star Trek, etc.? I just don't see what people think is setting this apart outside of its brand.

Why does it have to be set apart? Star Wars changed the fuckjng genre and helped make what it is today. It's the story that is different than all those. The Star Wars saga has captured people's imaginations for generations. (Normal people. Not people like you ) and this trailer - for damn near everyone (except you and mcp) points exactly to why Star Wars was special in the first place.

Why have I been summoned to this thread? I was trying to let you monkeys be while you seizure and dance.

It's a nice looking trailer. But JJ is great at big shots that translate well to trailers, and none of the things I dislike about him are going to show up in a promo. I think he reduces everything around those big shots. Characters, dialogue, storytelling. They all get cut down to simplest terms. His movies are like nerd Michael Bay.

Now maybe the new screenwriter will help prevent that, but that's an assumption based on a movie that's over 30 years old. We'll see. my expectation of JJ would be that to him, Star Wars is basically the millennium falcon, laser swords, space explosions and a giant planetary weapon. He's a great technician with lots of love in his soul and no talent for telling a tale.

I love the idea of the new characters and the journeys they are about to take. i think the finn character could be a really great story line. I dont care of its nostalgia, its part of Star Wars. I think it would be terrible to tell a completely different tale without the skywalkers. I also love the idea that Kylo Renn is a obsessed with Darth Vader and carrying on his mission. These are all great launch pads for potentially great stories.

It certainly shares an aesthetic with Star Trek, but we don't really need to discuss the why's of all of that. It does, still however, stand alone in tone and palate from Abram's Trek. These two movies don't look they're happening in the same time and place.

The actions sequences look completely different from Oblivion and especially Ender's Game. The aircraft have weight. Look at the way the wounded Tie-fighter thing falls toward that planet or whatever. My gut fluttered like on a roller-coaster when that X-Wing dove into the smoke. Man! You can feel the motion and the mass of the thing.

Those exploration scenes at the front of the trailer are dripping with mood and tone and history. That's the other thing, I think, more than nostalgia-tickling (which I also hate and love that there's so little of in this, really), those scenes have a real sense of history. I don't know. It just doesn't feel or look anything like those movies you mentioned, other than Trek, but even that isn't quite the same, just obviously Abrams.

There is some legitimacy in this. Certainly possible that Abrams' shortcomings outweigh his strengths here. We'll have to wait and see when the thing drops. But I'm just talking about what's in that trailer. And it looks very promising. I know you hated his Trek, but I goddamn loved it. And everything I've seen so far makes me believe this will be even better.

I really loved how it LOOKS. It really does feel like live sets, props, real world tangibleness compared to the prequel.
