I agree with this. Battle is way more overproduced and glossy sound.

oh, i could agree they changed it, but its not the " THE FIRST ALBUM SOUNDS AWFUL" situation.

For me, it sounds way better than Battle or Renegades, and yet those sound cool too.

I must have had the Bass Boost engaged on my headphones when I listened to their s/t recently.

It sounded INCREDIBLE!

I have a negative amount of knowledge about music production, and 99% of the time I have no idea what Trag is talking about when it comes to the topic. But I completely agree with him here. S/T has always been my least favorite RATM album, and a lot of it has to do with the way it sounds (and I generally never rate an album on production, minus a handful of exceptions). Something about it sounds thin(?) compared to the albums that followed. Had it been on a small indie label, it’d make more sense. Maybe that was the goal, I don’t know. But something about the production reminds me of early RHCP albums.

The entire album is INSANELY relevant right now. I'm surprised the government hasn't declared RATM and their fans a terrorist organization yet.

Gggarth Richardson did both this album and the red hot chili peppers mothers milk, so your ears are working just fine!
Holy cow, I’ve always compared the sound to Mothers Milk.

Might be time for a career change.

I dont hear anything even remotely close to early RHCP.

I could see it maybe with BSSM but Mother's Milk? RATM has a space and the bass is way more interesting than MM.

MM sounds like the band played it inside a tin box

It’s not an exact comparison, but the one I’ve always found the most similar to me. I guess RATM was recorded like 4 years after Mother’s Milk, so I’m sure some advances in technology occurred and skills developed. So, Mother’s Milk sounds like its in a tin box, and RATM sounds like its in a tin box with the lid open.

Meh. This all sounds like personal preference stuff (like snatcher I have ZERO knowledge or qualifications regarding mixing/production/engineering/etc, an album; I just know when something sounds good to me). I don't think Rage's debut sounds thin at all. That's not at all the right word. I love the way it sounds and prefer it quite a bit to Battle (which is the only other RATM album I've heard in full).

The debut sounds lose and open where Battle sounds over-loud and oppressive. I had a headache after Battle (though I like several of the songs; I'm not talking about songwriting here, obviously). Like I said, Battle is bombastic where S/T is open. I just prefer that sound.

But I totally get why that big, full, blast of Battle is more appealing to some. Makes sense to me.

I love this:
I am the Niña, the Pinta, the Santa Maria
The noose and the rapist, the fields' overseer
The agents of orange, the priests of Hiroshima
The cost of my desire
Sleep now in the fire
