At first it didn't do much for me, but the last PJ single I've instantly liked was 'I am Mine' so...
I has some garage Strokes vibes, which they have tried before on BS. But this sounds better.
Clearly not as good as DotC but still an entertaining song, we will never get the old PJ back.
But as this stage of their career all I wanted was something different from them.
Superblood sure is different. It's not using complicated chords or beats. But it is experimenting with structure.
The damn song doesnt have a chorus (or a verse for that matter). And that is something PJ has never done before ..
Agree with all this, I would like to just enjoy the song and appreciate it for what it is, but i think a year from now this will go in the bin like random backspacer rockers. I still was hoping PJ would make something more introspective using texture and moods rather than trying to make a song for the live shows. Theres no reason they couldnt move on from a humble garage band meets stadium rock sound they've been trying for the last 15 years.

It's a waste of their talents.
Remember when we tentatively said 'concept album?'

Listened to this a couple more times on headphones. There are a few things going on and the guitars aren’t as weak as I though. It starts off like Again Today but Again Today is the much better song. The guitars are looser there.
This may be less annoying than MYM so that’s something. I guess I should raise it to a 3*.

First impression - messy. Not sure if that’s necessarily a bad thing yet or not.
It reminds me of something old they covered in the last few years, can’t quite place it though.
At least the production is good.

to me, messy is the best thing going for it, imagine a LB version of it.

I can hear you, singin' in the distance
I can see you when I close my eyes
Once you were somewhere, and now you're everywhere
I'm feeling selfish and I want what's right
I ask for forgiveness, I beggar myself
feeling angry, now get off the stage (shelf?)
Right now I feel, a lack of innocence searching for reveal
hypnotonic resonance I feel
not much of anything, and the cause is life or death
A life of hopelessness, fucks all your focusedness
I've been hoping that our hope does last
I don't know anything, I question everything
This life I love is going way too fast
Both my eyes are swollen
my face is broken
And I'm hopin that I hurt your
hopin that I hurt your
hopin that I hurt your fist
She was a stunner, & I am stunned
And the first thought or second thought was 'could be the one'
I was a prisoner, of keys & the cuffs
Yeah I was feeling fortunate to be locked up
But the world got to spinnin, always felt like it was ending
and love not withstanding we are each of us fucked
I'm in danger, feelin in the distance
I can see you when I close my eyes

the mic is distorted and the guitars more aggressive in the last verse / outro, cool

I enjoyed this, but then I do like GSMF, MYM, Johnny Guitar etc
Really like the verse vocal melody.

my least favourite things:
the drum intro is just so *spare*, they may as well have just pressed play on a metronome (at least that would have been a surprise); it sounds a lot like "Undone" and that's a better song
"she was a stunner..." - I don't care about Ed's hot chicks
everything else is pretty rad; it's the same kind of song they've tried a few times now, without most of the trappings and with more drive

I've got news for you, buddy. They do it because they can. And this is one of the extents of their talent at work.
They're in their 50s now. Creative energy is usually gone in most people by their age. The fact that they're making music and seem to have a renewed passion with this album is better than we should expect by now.

Listened to it a couple of times now, settled on a 3. I really dig the song quite a bit - it's not revolutionary but I'm a big fan of the chord progression, the mix is pretty great, the goofy 'la da da's are somehow not awful and actually one of the better parts of the song.
Came close to rating it a 4, but then I thought about how I'm judging it through a lens of the last decade and a half of Pearl Jam and got sad thinking about how they'll likely never release anything again that resonates with me as much as even Riot Act.
Still crossing my fingers that they're just pushing this out as the straight forward 'rock' song to get the Facebookers on board, but even the fact that they'd feel the need to do that kinda bums me out.
Anyway, I'll contentedly nod my head to this while waiting for the album, hoping that it has more stuff on there that makes me think 'man, only Pearl Jam could do this'.

Especially considering they looked at what they had created earlier with BO’B and had the sense to bin the (possibly awful) mess.

Thanks for the info, buddy.
They're starting to destroy their own legacy.

i would generally take a serious fast song over a playful one (although I think songs like wws and mym ride that borderline better than given credit for), but I like that this does feel like they are having actual fun rather than the ‘webster’s dictionary defines fun as...’ songs
its wordy but doesnt feel overstuffed like getaway
3 stars feels right still. I like it.
lots of cool stuff happening underneath the primary parts
