This is an interesting question. And now that you've got me thinking about it, I might be able to change my mind and see things your way. I need to see a good argument on both sides.
Do we separate the Tom Petty material from the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers material?
That was the initial idea, yeah. That's one of the examples that sparked this debate. In the rules for this thread, Argo says they are separate. Ditto Bruce and Bruce + E-Street. There's also some debate has to whether or not Jack White should be an umbrella that covers all his work or if you can/should treat each as its own thing.
That’s a stupid idea. It should be inclusive if that artist writes all the material. Tom Petty pretty much did. At least all the lyrics so he had a hand in every original song he recorded. Same with Springsteen. If White wrote all the material, then his should be too.
If I want to put Mudcrutch on my list do I have to include the bass player's side projects?
Yes. But not the Wilburys

There is guaranteed not a person on this board who included tom petty as one of their picks and Tom petty and the heartbreakers as another pick. Same with Neil young and also springsteen.
However, there is a person who voted for both jack white and also the white stripes, because their works could be separated.
I had more to say about this but I'm tired. Sorry!

I actually think we are remarkably close to agreement on this matter.
Let's make the definitive list the artists that will be consider as a single entity for the purposes of this activity (quote and add more as you see fit):
Bruce Springsteen / Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Nick Cave / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Tom Petty / Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy
The Microphones and Mount Eerie
Neil Young / Neil Young & Crazy Horse
OR, we could just have a standing rule that if you want to be considered as the same entity then the band name must include the solo name. Just make that the sole rule and be done with it.

Personally, I'd be opposed to this route. We can navigate a little nuance with grace and understanding, I hope

In the original tourney run by mowbs back in the day, PJ was excluded. It's been a long time and a lot of people feel differently about the band than they did way back when. Is Pearl Jam the heavy favorite to get first place here? Definitely. Will they, though?
Fifteen years ago? No doubt. PRAMG? Let's find out

Should also work the same for
DMB / Dave & Tim
John Mayer / John Mayer Trio
