Tom has to go to space for a Mission movie. It’s the final frontier. Stunts are probably easier on the body up there, too!
The villain will be an alien race whose main distinguishing characteristic is they all look like Jean Reno.

He's already shooting a movie with Ana De Armas in space!

Tom you are 62; just enjoy life

Something tells me if Tom ever stops moving the demons will catch up.

The Church of Scientology isn't gonna fund itself, buddy.

Deeper follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench. Pic has been in development for almost a decade, originally set at MGM in April 2016, which bought a Max Landis spec. I’ve heard Christopher McQuarrie is involved with the script now. Originally, Bradley Cooper was to star, with Kornél Mundruczó directing; Idris Elba and filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur teamed on a later iteration that likewise failed to move forward.

Another negative: while none of the music was bad, per se, it was definitely lacking any standout pieces and some of the reprises from the last few films felt "thin" to me. Lorne Balfe's absence was felt.

That is generally true, but there were also moments where the music was very good. The ominous chanting during the submarine sequence gave the right amount of eerie, otherworldly ambiance that I really enjoyed, felt very Kubrick.
I'm gonna watch this a second time this weekend -- not because I loved it so much but I'm gonna tag along with some friends who are watching it for the first time. It'll be good to analyze it a little better now that I know what to expect.

Totally agree on the sub sequence -- to the point where it felt like an entirely different (and much, much better) movie. Thats probably among the reasons I thought it was shot for DR.

Sean Fennessy was clearly not ready to record the podcast on this yet. Saw it only once, right after the Knicks winning their series, in the FRONT ROW of an IMAX theater and several plot points--points painfully, excruciatingly beaten over the audience's heads multiple times--flew over his head. Do better, Sean!

They sure do make what is a pretty straightforward plot (get the thing, chase the guy to get the other thing, put the first thing in the other thing) sound extremely convoluted.

One negative that I just thought of - no masks!
Or maybe that's not a negative, depending on your preference.
I would have liked if that, at the very end, Grace removes her mask to reveal that it was Rebecca Ferguson the whole time

Masks when they broke Pom out of jail.
I thought the movie was gonna end with Ethan waking up inside the Entity box. Inception moment.

Oh damn, ok. That must have been at the very beginning. I missed the first few minutes.

The "tricky finessing" / smoke & mirrors / spy-games element was mostly absent. It was brute force all the way.
I'm not necessarily bothered by that, we had 7 movies of that stuff. But it was definitely missing.

The tradition of a character saying the title of the movie continued once again. In fact, I think "final reckoning" was said at least twice.

Yeah I think Gabriel says "Ethan, this is your final reckoning." You can tell they overdubbed it though. If you watch his lip movement closely he actually says "Ethan, this is your dead reckoning part two."

lol. But seriously, being able to include the title in the dialogue is probably the main reason why they changed it.

Speaking of Gabriel, he was definitely a lame villain.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was amazing, but I'd say Solomon Lane was best villain in the franchise.
