Well, Lament?

At the moment I'd be tempted to say I like Generals more than the first one, but I could see how that would change after I listen to it as much as I've listened to the debut. The abrasiveness of it really plays into my tastes, though. Karma Debt is a fantastic opening track.

I'd give it all for a legacy of love.

That's a really good song too. Radiator Sister is another that's standng out to me as well right now.
I knew the songs Generals and Body or Work beforehand from Saddle Creek/CMJ samplers I have, so those are stand outs to me at the moment as well, but that might be in part cause they were already familiar.

It's pretty early with too few listens to pick one album over the other, but for now the sophomore effort is better.

There's no wrong answer to that question, though put me in the debut is better camp.

Generals is my favourite because I'm so attached to the concept / lyrical content. It kind of arrived in my life at exactly the right time, given stuff that was going on, so I have an emotional attachment that I don't have with the debut. However I'm not interested in disputing it because these are The Mynabirds. Both records are brilliant. I'm nervous of the third one, but all signs point to it being great as well.

With The Mynabirds, I'm kinda where I was with Band of Horses before their third release, but times ten. I just can't conceive of an idea/direction the 'birds could move with #3 that would feel like a letdown.
I'm just not sure they're capable of a bad record.

I was thinking the other day about the three new songs I heard her play last October. At first I was like "oh, we're going to get another piano driven folksy mo-town album in the vein of the debut". Which is fine, because she does that really, really, really well. But then I remembered that she played songs from Generals at that show and it was still just her singing at a grand piano, so you heard the skeletal structure of the song as she originally wrote it. What I'm saying is, despite what we've heard with those three songs, they could end up sounding like anything under the sun by the time arrangements and instrumentation is finalized for the record.
