So, basically, he regrets all the great performances, music and recordings during their heyday, and now we are stuck with songs like future days, let the records play and lightning bolt. because, you know, now he knows who he his and is comfortable with it.
:haha:

My final word on this... or until Stip replies and I fly off the handle (apologies in advance, maybe I need a surfcation) is, once again, like I said before, it's totally cool. I'm glad the man finds inspiration somewhere. I like having new Pearl Jam music. I like Eddie Vedder. I've never been surfing, but I bet I'd like that too. Because I love ocean. The ocean gives me inspiration. Anyway, the song is fine. It's mid-level PJ at best and it doesn't inspire me. But I'm glad it inspires others.

:heartbeat: :peace:

It doesnt inspire me either Joey. Also, I too would probably enjoy surfing even though im scared of sharks. I always thought if i tried it out and loved it id end up moving to a small surf town in Cali somewhere. Much Like how I moved to Vail when i fell in love with skiing.
That sounds like heaven. Let's move to a small town in California and take up surfing, friend!

I enjoy Unthought Known and think the hate it gets is undeserved.

I agree Mike. A louder, dirtier guitar in there would be nice though.

I can't stand it. It's disappointing on every level.

At the time it came out, it was everybody's favorite song on the album, hailed as a new "Given To Fly". I think the backlash of hatred that it now gets is a reaction to that initial over-reaction. I mean, it's not an outright terrible song, but it's extremely dull and unsatisfying and goes nowhere, kind of like "Gone". I think people liked it because it was so dramatic and explosive, and they were desperate for another Eddie Anthem™.

I've not liked it from early on, but I do enjoy Amongst the Waves a bit. It's probably my favorite from Backspacer, which doesn't mean much.

Yeah, I couldn't stand Unthought Known from the moment it came out. Even the name makes me angry.

This was totally me.

The song is fine but super bland. It was nice when ed did it solo acoustic at his shows though.

Um, no, sir it was never my favorite song on the album. I feel the same about it now as I did then. Some cool parts. Mostly boring. Don't get why folks like it so much. But now it turns out a lot of folks don't like it so much.

Unthought Known does get points for the best use of the phrase "gems and rhinestones" in a pop/rock song.

UK is 4-5 really excellent moments in an otherwise uninteresting song. I basically never seek it out, but if it comes on I'll listen because I know there will be a few parts I'll enjoy, and nothing is bad

I saw Ed debut that song in his Newark solo show. I really liked it then - and, it seemed like something that really be improved with the band behind him. It was ultimately a let down on the album. The "big" moments come across a bit contrived and the music is kinda bland - almost like a much-watered down version of Betterman.

I'd agree with most of this, except that Gone is pretty good.

Hate that line. I just don't like gems and/or rhinestones for some reason.
