Pay attention to Thanos telling Stark “all that for one drop of blood?” My theory is that plays into how they defeat him.

The biggest surprise for me was how sympathetic Thanos was in the movie. He truly saw what he was doing as being for the betterment of the universe and wasn’t motivated by evil. Sure, the way he carried it out was pure evil, but for him, the ends certainly justified the means. And the scene with Gamora’s death was well done really brought the humanity within him out. Major kudos to Brolin. He made a character I never really cared about into a villain of epic proportions.

There were just so many perfect moments in this film. Definitely top of the heap MCU movie. Pretty much my guide to all of these movies is this: does it make me feel the way I felt when I was 10-13 years old reading my favorite Marvel mag? And this one was an astounding YES.

Also, while a couple of Guardians made their way to earth, notice that Starlord did not.

I do wish Stormbreaker was more like the Beta Ray Bill version rather than the Ultimate version of Mjolnir, but using part of Groot as the handle was fucking perfect. I actually got chills in that scene as I recalled it from the Walt issue.

I'm not going to spoiler this as its just a general statement, so,
Rule #1 - in comics - anything can happen
Rule #2 - anyone can die, and no one stays dead (unless you're in love with Peter Parker or one of his relatives)

So...
Spoiler: show
the people that are/were shocked by what characters died/survived are making me laugh. People actually outraged they killed BP / Spider-man, or, thinking it was stupid killing them because we already know they have sequels in the work. No one stays dead in the comics, and anything can happen so none of that shocked me, and, I'm sure pretty much everyone that disappeared will be back. And because of the Infinity Stones / Reality / Time being involved, none of these deaths moved me at all. None of them were as impactful as Xaviers or Logans in "Logan" Those, felt like deaths youre not coming back from / end of an era. The deaths in Infinity War seem like the standard Comic book rule #1 and Rule #2

Loki and Gamora are probably dead, right? And that sucks because Loki played by Hiddleston was my favorite

we will see, but it’s not like Logan’s death was a surprise or particularly courageous or shocking, coming in what was publically known to be jackman’s last performance, set in a time when the X-men were through. What matters is that the death in the movie was well done and emotionally resonant, and that would have been the case even if he came back in a future movie.

I like that Loki died a good guy, and that he completed his transformation into someone who both loved his brother and wanted to be more than a trickster

You can't handwave away Marvel's storytelling weaknesses by saying they are a serialized storytelling and thus not beholden to the same rules of other films, while also saying that a later resurrection doesn't diminish a character's death because the only important thing is that the death is emotionally resonant when it happens. If we accept these movies as one long story then yes it absolutely cheapens not just these particular deaths but the concept of death as a whole

totally disagree. these are hero's that by the very definition of their job put their lives on the line to stop bad guys that normal humans cannot. whether they come back or not it shows they are in a dangerous line of work. for instance, you see stark putting his life on the line in the battle of new york, or vs whiplash and think ho hum no biggie.

but then IM III comes out and you see his suffering from PTSD and it affects him as a hero and even to now.

yes those aformentioned deaths will be ret-conned but i bet they will have a lasting impact on the characters

That's what I would guess. I can't imagine that being "erased from existence" is the same as the character dying." ... at least for the purposes of this story.

it all depends on how you do it. Death IS comparatively cheap in a story with magic because it can always be undone. that’s a genre limitation (especially in comicswr) not a marvel issue. So if you bring back a character in a way that works well in the story or impacts that character (or others) in meaningful ways it doesnt necessarily cheapen the death. if may also depend on how a character dies/why.

Han Solo’s carbonite freezing isnt diminished because he is freed later, or Gandalf’s death in LOTR when he returns
Spoiler: show
thus far the only death I dont want undone is Loki since he dies w his arc complete. gamora’s death was hard, but in the service of thanos’ story, so they coukd do more with her. the dusted avengers was a shocking moment in the story, but not empty shock value, and coyld be undone in the course of the story if told properly - ideally offset by another sacrifice

Neither of your examples are deaths, Stip.

Gandalf’s was. He dies (of sorts) and is resurrected. And han being frozen takes him out of the story in a quasi permanent way, until the narrative undoes it. And fantasy/comic deaths work the same way - you can always unfreeze someone from carbonate. So the value in the death is not necessarily its permanence (though it can be). It is the way the death impacts the narrative, the characters, and the audience (and if the undoing of the death serves a similar purpose)

And when effectively done, a comic/fantasy death can still be powerful knowing full well it may not last.

I mean, I'll give you Gandalf. I honestly don't know. If he dies, literally, and literally comes back to life, then that story is worse than I originally thought.

But Han doesn't count.
