Re: What podcasts are you listening to?
I haven't ever listened to any of the TED Talks. Are those like that?

Have you ever listened to hardcore history?LoathedVermin72 wrote:Anyone have any recommendations for good history or academic podcasts? I want, like, class lecture stuff. Dry and informative.

No. I looked it up earlier and it didn't really seem like what I was looking for. But I've heard it's good; maybe I should give it a shot anyway.tommymtcom wrote:Have you ever listened to hardcore history?LoathedVermin72 wrote:Anyone have any recommendations for good history or academic podcasts? 'Whistlestop' is very good: it's basically just John Dickerson geeking out about old presidential elections.
'Presidential' has its moments: They're going through one by one and examining each President individually.

"In Our Time" with Melvin Brag is a podcast I've been listening to longer than just about any other. It's a once-a-week thing where the host sits down with 3 academics and chats with them about a topic, produced by the BBC. And it can be anything, so one week they may be talking about the British Restoration and then the next week it might be about Saturn. They recently split up their podcast streams by topic, so you could just subscribe to the History one if you want--but I highly suggest the science feed, too.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Anyone have any recommendations for good history or academic podcasts? You made me download the first episode of The Black Tapes. Tell me what I'm listening to, because after Welcome to Nightvale I guess I expect better acting in my podcasts.
Is it even acting? Is it a performance piece where the main interviewer is the only person who can speak like they're not reading something?

I talked about that on the last page--it's really, really stilted, and I'd be surprised if anyone on this was a professional voice actor. But once you get over that, it gets a tad bit more interesting.bune wrote:You made me download the first episode of The Black Tapes. History of Rome is a good one and the same guy who did that is currently doing one called Revolutions about...revolutions. He started with England followed by the U.S. and France. Currently he's nearing the end of Haiti which is fascinating as it's something I never knew much about.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Anyone have any recommendations for good history or academic podcasts? Re: What podcasts are you listening to?
The creators of the podcast are filmmakers who basically couldn't get the money together to do a mocumentary/found footage type film. So they decided to take the concept and make it a podcast instead. As such it has excellent production values. But yeah, it's mostly their friends and stuff and not a lot of really competent actors. Like ST said, once you let go of that fact, it's much more enjoyable.Simple Torture wrote:I talked about that on the last page--it's really, really stilted, and I'd be surprised if anyone on this was a professional voice actor. Planet Money, Reply All, and This American Life are desert island podcasts for me.

Re: What podcasts are you listening to?
I would say that if you didn't care for the first two episodes then the thing probably isn't for you. Though it does expand way beyond Bowe and what you get in those first 2 hours. It gets much more complex and Sarah is just such a fantastic storyteller. I thought it was an outstanding season. The final three episodes were my three favorite, for whatever that's worth. Great finale.tragabigzanda wrote:Was this any good? I was so bored by the first two eps, and with the story playing out in the mainstream media, I was never compelled to see what Koenig might add that was new or interesting. But I do have a 12-hour drive next week, so...durdencommatyler wrote:Last episode of Serial S2 today...
