Saw 'The Ballad of Wallis Island' yesterday. I really enjoyed it. Simple story, well acted. Funny. Touching. But it would have to have been the worst movie ever made for me not to enjoy it: Carey Mulligan, British Island, Folk Music, Rom-Com vibes.
Very curious about the short film on which it's based.

White Buffalo (1977). It sucked pretty bad, but Charles Bronson looks cool and I wish there were more supernatural westerns.

J Lee Thompson is an interesting director, he made Cape Fear and Guns of Navaronne, then made the last two Planet of the Apes sequels, and also made Happy Birthday to Me (one of the better slashers), and ended his career making complete shit like Death Wish 4. And in between he made a bunch of weird or cheapo ones like White Buffalo. The kind of journeyman career arc you don’t really see anymore.

The Amateur has some fun moments, even if the plot is full of silly contrivances. I like the concept of a wannabe CIA field agent learning on the job and fucking up left and right (though they kind of abandon that at some point).
But what the hell is Jon Bernthal doing there? He's in three scenes, one of which he doesn't even have any dialogue, totaling maybe four minutes. He doesn't do anything of note. What was the point of his character? Feels like a late-stage add-on. "Whoops, we've got some budget left over. Okay, let's shoot a couple quick scenes with an actor people know so we can put it in the trailer."
He's probably some important character in the book whose role got trimmed way down for the movie, but he felt completely pointless to me. Should've scrubbed him out altogether.

Bernthal in that movie was hilarious to me, too. Entirely pointless. Disconnected from every other character and the whole plot. Doesn't have any character development or arc of his own. Just two(?) meaningless appearances that in the moment are given what seems like a lot of weight. He's introduced as if he is a big deal and then he re-appears in a way that makes it seem like he is about to change the trajectory of the plot. But he doesn't at all. He just appears and is ignored and immediately forgotten. It's really very funny

A Complete Unknown was nice. Nothing mind blowing, but I enjoyed it. Chalamet’s Dylan voice was a little distracting at times. Joan Baez was very attractive.

Mission Impossible 1 last week. Always a good time.
An Anders watch of Mission Impossible 2. I dislike pretty much everything about this.
