Re: What movies are you watching?
Guardians - 2017
During the cold war russia super beings are created by Patriot to protect the mother lands interests.
Arsus (Anton Pampushnyy) - genetically altered to turn into a kodiak bear/human hybrid
Kseniya (Alina Lanina) - given the power of invisibility but only in water
Ler (Sebastien Sisak) - basically an earth bender
Khan (Sanjar Madi) - super speed
once the cold war ends the soldiers do their best to blend in with civilians. When the threat of General Mayor Nikolay Dolgov resurfaces Major Elena Larina is given the Patriot files. General Mayor has the ability to take command of anything electronic. he attacks a small field unit testing robitic infantry and takes them for his army.
Major Elena first approches Ler who demonstrates his power as he moves all the rubble around them and says he wants nothing to do with the military. His mind changes quickly when the major informs him that the General is back and is looking to spread terror. It is then revealed that the General was part of the Patriot program and escaped and vowed revenge.
Next up is Arsus who is a brilliant scientist. he explains how the Patriots have an extended life due to their altered genetics. There is also some worry on his part that with each transformation he risks losing his humanity for good.
Kseniya is living her best life as an entertainer. performing high dives into a pool and showing off her invisibilty when she climbs out. the audience thinks it is some kind of illusion and doesnt realize she has powers. it is hinted at that she has lost her memory.
Khan is shown in a desert. A small battalian are approaching in trucks tricked out with gatling guns and other weapons to take him out. His costume is perhaps the most bad ass looking. there is a crescent behind each shoulder with handles. just then his eyes go white and he grabs the handles. turns out they are swords in a circular shape. he attacks the convoy and slices the vehicles in half and then he kills the men. He initially refuses to join the others preferring to work alone until he is told of the General's involvement.
As they get back to Patriot HQ Major elana explains what they know so far which is very little but have been able to track down his base. the team flies out to do battle and promptly have their asses kicked. Arsus, khan and Kseniya are held separately from Lev. Major Elana and her guards spring into action to rescuse when they notice all the cameras are out of order and cannot get any readings off the team.
as the team regroups their is despair that they cannot do anything and are at his mercy. the usualy pep talk speach is given and each soldier is given a uniform that upgrades and blends in with their power. Khans suite is damage resistant, Kseniya's suit allows her to turn invisible even with out water. Ler gets a set of electromagnetic whips that attach to his outfit. in addition there are several rocks that form around his outfit so that he always has rocks to manipulate. Finally Arsus gets the most bad ass upgrade. a chain gun that swings around when he is in his hybrid bear form. when he goes to full bair it mounts on his back and shoots at what he sees.
another quick monologue about the danger they are facing and Kseniya talks about this ring she has. shes not sure where she got it from or who she got it from but it holds a sentimental place in her heart. its revealed that Arsus loves her and has secretly been keeping an eye on her to ensure her safety.
they go after the general again who has stolen a giant space needle that is needs in order to brodcast his control of machinery over the whole world.
teamwork ensues and the battle is won
the end
or is it.
post credit scene shows Elena being transported in the back of a truck and when the doors open she is attacked by soldiers. she asks who sent them to which they reply
ferrum

this was one of those movies that get suggested to you if watch enough superhero movies. it was only 90 minutes so a lot of the plot is laid out pretty quick with not a lot of buildup of details. the movie only made something like 10 million world wide and cost an estimated 380 million rubels.
the special effects are fairly cheesey although the automated attack bots have a look of a cross between a tank, droideka's and viper probe droids. Lev and Khans costumes are a pleasing design but the special effects for Arsus are laughable at best. the story had some legs but due to the short run time it fell flat
6 out of 10 if you are looking to just kill some time
2 out of 10 if you are looking for a oscar worthy movie

Fight or Flight.
Low effort, even for this genre. Dull action. Humor that doesn't remotely work. None of it makes any sense. The bad guys are all generic henchmen nobodies. I like Josh Hartnett, but he has nothing to work with.

Additional notes:
- I'm sorry but I just cannot look at Jennifer Coolidge's face anymore. I just can't.
- on the flip side, was Jenny Ortega created in a lab to be the cutest thing in the world? She's like a cartoon character.

Safe House.
Good one. Denzel is on autopilot and he is still very compelling. Espinosa is such a weird director...he has very good ones and a few that are unwatchable.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - one of the top movies of the decade.
The Waterboy - well this is dumber'n hell. The shit we used to laugh at.
Spirited Away : still probably my second or third favorite Ghibli movie. Or first.

Re: What movies are you watching?
I watched L'Empire the other day and absolutely fucking loved it. You know how Disney wouldn't let Zack Snyder make his Star Wars movie so he just did it anyway and called it Rebel Moon? Bruno Dumont pretty much did the same thing with this, and it's as insane and wonderful as that sounds.
Not counting legacy guys like Spielberg, Dumont is maybe my favorite working director. I just love him.

Outstanding movie. I want to watch it again. Seriously one of the best things I’ve seen in a while.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I watched L'Empire the other day and absolutely fucking loved it. Re: What movies are you watching?
Hamlet 1996 (best overall)
Hamlet 1948 (Olivier is kinda wooden, but the movie looks great)
Hamlet 1990 (Gibson isn't great)
Rozencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
Gave up trying to find Hamlet 2000.
