Revisited The Deer Hunter last night. What an astonishing movie. I feel like I'm the inverse of most people's reactions since I've heard soooooo many complaints about how long the wedding stuff is at the beginning. For me, the only parts of the movie that drag just a little are the Vietnam sequences. The Russian Roulette scenes are still very gnarly and intense, but I think some of the stuff over there could have been trimmed just a touch (and I HATE the brief bits of stock footage). However, all of the stuff in Pennsylvania is genuinely some of the best filmmaking I have ever seen. The verisimilitude of the milieu is unmatched; I may not have grown up in PA, but I did grow up in rural Wisconsin, and, frankly, I know all of these people. I know all of these settings. The bars, the lodges, the halls, the dark wood, the beer, the people, the roads, the homes, all of it - I recognize all of them. They are so real. I absolutely love how much time Cimino allows all of those scenes, letting things breathe, develop, and unfurl expertly. And he never gives a sense of being above any of these people or places (the antidote to, say, the smug, cynical, and detached way Alexander Payne portrays rural America in Nebraska) - it's portrayed respectfully but also honestly. And every moment is laden with multiple, thorny layers of meaning.

Obviously the movie is loaded top to bottom with all-timer performances (the cast is truly nuts), but this time, I was especially struck by George Dzundza, who delivers a moving and understated performance - even when he's going against powerhouses like De Niro, Walken, Cazale, etc. The moment when he breaks down while cooking eggs really got to me - I felt that way, way down inside.

What a piece of work, wow. I hate what Hollywood did to Cimino after Heaven's Gate. He should be considered a major American artist.

I finally watched Godzilla: Minus One

You guys weren't kidding; this movie fucking rules. I wasn't expecting the human element to hit so hard. It was straight-up beautiful.

Just not what I expected from a monster movie, I guess.

I thought the most interesting thing about the movie was “is she really an alien?” And I was pretty sure it was just a choice to play the part as an alien, but who was actually human in the end, but I’m glad I was wrong. Answering that I think absolutely needed to happen, but I felt that her emerging from the goo on the spaceship should’ve been the final shot. Everything that came after that moment felt unnecessary even if it did produce some interesting shots

Bugonia ruled. Probably Plemons' best performance to date, and Stone wasn't far off.

Kind of difficult to talk about without spoiling. Just go watch it.

95% is about right.

only thing I didn't like about it was that she turned out to want to help humanity? That didn't make any sense. And did she somehow blow up Plemons? That part was weird.

She got lucky Plemons blew up. I didn't love the ending either until the final montage. Loved the final montage and made the silliness of the preceding few minutes worth it. Loved that montage, wish it was way longer

Kinda looked like she was angling to hide behind that pillar to me. And that she looked like she was expecting it. Seems to me that she would either go for the gun or door. Didn't really work for me. Or maybe I'm imagining things.

And that was a long ass montage!
