No, I dislike both Fallout and Rogue Nation and generally don't like the stunt-based approach to set-pieces that Cruise and McQuarrie have developed. It feels conceived more to impress through real-life novelty than to excite via cinematic craftsmanship, and I don't respond to that. However, the biplane sequence in this feels like the best of both worlds: I couldn't believe what I was seeing Cruise do, but a big part of that is because they also took the time to really design the sequence with shots and progressing action beats that function as craft. This felt like a real movie action sequence (the Return of the Jedi-style cross-cutting between different scenes adds to this, I think), whereas the helicopter set-piece in Fallout kinda played like an IMAX documentary.

Frankenfine+ for me.

Del Toro is like Tim Burton. Some really cool moments in his movies but overall I'm not impressed.

The first similar film that comes to mind is Blue Valentine. Which I also adore.

I found the first act to be a total slog, but the film finds another gear once it transitions into a comedy centered around the delightfully incompetent henchmen. Seriously, those characters were all amazing.

It wasn't the preceding 90 minutes of tedious exposition dumping?

The plane sequence was fine, but by then I was actively hostile to the movie because of how terrible and boring the first 2/3rds of it was.

The Long Walk

Eh, it was fine. Strong performances from Jonsson and Hoffman (who I hadn't realized was PSH's son!) and I liked that they didn't shy away from the brutality of it all. The script did feel a little thin/cliche at times, though. I guess I'm just not much of a King guy.

I don't care for Stephen King but I liked The Long Walk a lot

While we're talking about King - went and saw the new Running Man last night. It was average at best
