Marty Supreme: I thought all of the characters were very well acted, but I got nothing from the story. Marty is too unlikable to make the emotional beat at the very end worth it

Jay Kelly.

Yeez what a disaster. Clooney is great because the dude is such a star but the movie is a plain disaster trying so hard to be cool and important and deep. Ey!! We have a dance scene cmon!! Ey we have a scene with everyone looking at a cinema screen super happy and emotional! Ey we have a dad scene!! And two stranged daughters!!

Please Noah, please.

You're turning “I wouldn’t want to know this person” into “This is a failure of storytelling.”

That’s a category error.

No I’m not.
What I’m reacting to is the idea that an ending only works if you feel emotionally aligned with the protagonist. For me, the ending lands because it’s consistent and implied, not because Marty earns approval.

I like Marty. Marty is driven. Marty was born to do one thing. If Marty was born in a country that loved ping-pong or if Marty's dad was a banker, Marty would've just been a showboating ping-pong player. Poverty and an unwillingness to give up on his dream that turned him into a criminal. (and, yes, some lack of humility, but why should he be humble? He is 23 and the best at what he does)

great movie

Great response. I just have one correction to make: it’s table tennis, not ping pong

I’m of the ”I don’t necessarily like Marty, but I’m rooting for him” camp.

I admire him and find him hilariously compelling and brilliantly acted, but I wouldn't want to be in his company for long in real life.

I'd go on a road trip with you and him, but would probably kill him first.

Sounds good buddy.

For those who've seen it, how do you suppose he did that apple trick at the hotel? Any ideas?

Very much enjoyed One Battle After Another and hate I missed it in the theater. I would say it's not quite top-tier PTA, but I can understand how it has more commercial appeal than his others. Probably his easiest to watch and digest. Did anybody else feel like some of the comedic elements had a Coens-y tone?

Yup.
Kinda like Bugonia in that sense for me.
I’m not a huge Yorgos or PTA fan, and these two are probably my top 2 of 2025.

American Sweatshop.

The movie is not that good, but the idea is and Lili Reinhart is just great. She had a great year with this one and Hal & Harper.

OBAA and Bugonia would be my top 2 also.

Sinners is probably third. Movie was fun as hell. Only racists (such as Jorge) didn't like that movie.

I'm fairly certain my top two is going to end up being Marty Supreme and The Secret Agent. Still some movies to look at before being absolutely certain, thoigh

I haven't seen either of those, but my expectations are through the roof for both.
