It was the first console 2D Mario in 20 years. IMO, it was close to perfect.

I played NSMBU recently and that absolutely ranks last for me. I'll have to pick up NSMB again to see about that one.

the satisfaction of beating SMB3 for the first time ever was a huge accomplishment for me as a young gamer. Going through the whole thing without warp whistles is a whole nother thing

Absolutely, I can still remember the summer afternoon my brother and I beat it. One of my first gaming accomplishments.
