It's such a weird movie, I think. And there's so much to discuss about it. Mostly, I'm curious my the movie was so maligned. Why did everyone dislike it so much? What worked for people and what didn't? And why.

But I'll start with the opening credits. Like... he was taking a shot at Woody Allen right? That font is a Woody Allen font. And the way he does Cast (in order of appearance) and the old-timey vocal jazz music behind it. It's totally Woody Allen all the way. Which is hilarious? It sets such a strange tone for a movie that is... funny at times, sure, but also wrestling with a lot. I think the opening credits mimicking a Woody Allen film is a really bold and interesting choice.

Is this movie satire? Is it trying to be absurd or abstract? There are a lot of things that suggest maybe we should be laughing a lot during the movie. He uses a ton of Robert Altman tricks as well.

I don't know. I really wish I hadn't watched the movie alone because I'm not sure I'll ever choose to put it on again but there's so much to discuss, I think. I felt this movie, good or bad, had a lot of heft and intention. It was so much better than Challengers. And the only other film of his that I've seen is Call Me By Your Name. I'm so torn on whether or not this guy is a good filmmaker!

I think the main problem is that it seems to be a vanity project only to try to upset people. Not just lets say, women or feminist or whatever but people. Everything seems calculated to provoque but without really saying anything. He is too afraid to actually have an opinion about it, so he puts the Allen font and music but then drops it and then he goes on with that non sensical ending.

I prefered Challengers, at least he is trying there to do a few things, like those amazing game shots. But yeah, its another very half baked movie.

I do liked Bones And All. It feels a bit more sincere even if you can say the ending might be too much misery porn or whatever. But its a good one, i actually care for those characters.

I think the dude knows how to shoot a movie but he is too interested on himself and that makes his movies suffer a lot.

Affluent White people win, that's the clear point of view. It isn't revolutionary but it's clear.

The movie is saying that as much as we want these things to be cut and dried, to be memeable and satisfying, they aren't. This shit is difficult even when we want it to be easy and obvious. Whatever flaws the movie has, childishness isn't one of them.

The movie is also maybe an indictment of filmmakers and the industry as much as anything, the more I think about it. There are clear references but I think there may also be scathing commentary about those influences. And whether or not they are entirely successful, I think they are interesting. This movie feels bolder than most even if there clear misses.

mm the affluent white people win...not quite sure. I dont remember much of it, as i saw it last year, but it felt Ayo Edebiri´s character won too? dont really remember.

As for my childish comment, i was referring as probably as hollow or maybe superficial. Thats mostly what the film felt to me.

not really. If Guadagnino was referring to 2012´s The Hunt, i see it as another of the shallow and ¨edgy¨ comments i was referring to, but i dont really know if thats the case.

As i said, i dont quite see how those two movies could have a common ground besides the obvious theme.

The Hunt? No, I'd never heard of it until researching After The Hunt. But since the latter is a clear reference to the former, it makes me really want to see it.

Looking to the plot of The Hunt, it helps me appreciate After The Hunt even more, but again that's without seeing it, so it's presumptive.
