I have never had this issue, but I also do not watch things with the sound via built-in TV speakers, so maybe that's part of the issue for people?BurtReynolds wrote:But I can't understand what the fuck they are saying half the time

Sure, but I find attitudes like this tend to accompany a generally incurious worldview, which is tough for me to sympathize with.Jorge wrote:One thing I try to remember is that movies aren't the most important thing for a lot of people. For some people they're not even in their top 50 most important things. Those people probably would prefer a dub over subs when they do watch movies.

Both of my kids and my parents do this. My parents, ok. They’re old and can’t hear. But my kids?LoathedVermin72 wrote:Yes, this is huge among people my age and younger and I absolutely fucking hate it. One weird wrinkle: Heated Rivalry has some Russian dialogue that is not subtitled unless you turn on closed captioning. The cynic in me says they just assumed everyone’s watching with it on anyway, why clutter the screen?

It might also be a Netflix settings issue, though.Mecca wrote:One weird wrinkle: Heated Rivalry has some Russian dialogue that is not subtitled unless you turn on closed captioning. The cynic in me says they just assumed everyone’s watching with it on anyway, why clutter the screen?
They often subtitle stuff that is already submitted, too, or subtitle things that are written.

It’s tangential to this thread, but to get back on track: I watched Crazy, Stupid, Love because Gosling. I don’t know if I’ve ever thought about how terrible to each other these people actually areVinylGuy wrote:guys do you want a subtitles thread maybe?

Re: What movies are you watching?
It's a great movie. It's complex and uncomfortable in so many ways, but I think that actually helps the film over time.VinylGuy wrote:never saw that oneMecca wrote:It’s tangential to this thread, but to get back on track: I watched Crazy, Stupid, Love because Gosling. Man, Sinners was such a slog. I don't understand the acclaim at all. The first half especially was so tedious and nothing felt organic about it at all. The dialogue unnatural, performances mediocre...And i'm far from an expert, but the way it was shot and color use felt cheap for lack of a better term. The overall theme was fine, but I couldn't have been less engaged by the time it's starting to be revealed. Like 90% of it looked like a Nic Cage B-movie to me.
Spina Tap II was solid. Didn't expect it to be anywhere near the original, but it was fun enough. Biggest thing were the new songs weren't that good.

Were there actually any new songs in it? I don’t remember any. “Bitch School”, for example, is decades old.lennytheweedwhacker wrote:Spina Tap II was solid. Didn't expect it to be anywhere near the original, but it was fun enough. Biggest thing were the new songs weren't that good.

So looks like some I thought were new are from a 1992 album they put out, which i'm pretty sure i've never heard.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Were there actually any new songs in it?
