phatj, maybe if you wouldn't be so combative and try to be more nuanced and give people the benefit of the doubt, a chance to explain themselves before you make harsh, quite possibly incorrect judgments about them, there wouldn't be so much conflict going on here.

You're right, you haven't technically said that we should force everyone back to work! But centering the small business owner's desire to re-open without providing protections for their workers who might feel justifiably unsafe going back in public (either because they're personally high-risk or they have loved ones who are) functionally mandates that they take that risk (to say nothing of how low-risk individuals can spread the disease asymptomatically to high-risk people without ever knowing). In other words, you seem unwilling or unable to recognize that the problem is *structural,* both in terms of how the virus spreads and how economic responsibility has been distributed within our society. I'm very sympathetic to the fact that your finances are shaky because of this closure--but that doesn't necessitate a right to go back to work when doing so may endanger dozens of other people, because it's not just about you. If that feels unfair, I suggest you think about the structures that places your own burden squarely on your back in the midst of a social/collective crisis.

I never saw your question. I did sell my stake and I was unemployed. That was many months ago. Since then, I went back to work. I have a new position and minority ownership in a small company. We have a group of employees that want to work. I don’t have a single employee at my company that would like to continue with the mandatory shutdown we remain under. Some of my employees have left our company in order to find “essential” work elsewhere. One of our co-owners travels 4 hours away from his wife and three small kids at home so he can work in the mines in northern Minnesota Monday-Friday. He is only able to be home on the weekends. According to the ideas of people here he is “endangering” his family by working. But he must do so. Our business isn’t “essential” enough for it to be open, and he isn’t getting any government assistance, so his hands are tied. He has to provide. This is not an abnormal situation. Millions of families and small businesses are being put in similar or worse situations. And for what? People are working anyway, now they are just financially burdened and forced to work in less than desirable situations, when a perfectly viable and lucrative business/job has been stripped away from them do to no fault of their own.
