What backstory do we need? From infancy to the day her mother was killed? I don't feel that we were shorted any in the movie as far as her past goes.

It brought feeling and faith back to the mystery of it all. The faith/skepticism dynamic between those was fun to watch play out.

I've read several in the old Expanded Universe, but only Tarkin and that one in the new. I feel like I need to watch the prequels again to remember the political maneuvering.
