It really is. I was watching that movie the other day and when that sequence hits, the movie becomes something totally different. It's like a religious experience or something; I'd put that up against anything in any of the other SW movies. John Williams's score is out of this world. And that moment when Qui-Gon and Maul are separated by the forcefield, waiting to continue fighting...Jeeeeeeezus!
If only the rest of the movie were as good.

I also enjoy the super-easy Jedi slaughtering battle droids stuff. It was the first time we saw so much lightsabering outside of a duel. Like "woah a lightsaber can melt a door?! WTF!"

I think the Hobbit trilogy has knocked the prequels off the top spot for most unnecessary CGI in a motion picture/trilogy.

It really is the best way to watch if you absolutely must watch the prequels. If I watch SW, it's only the original trilogy, or maybe the RedLetterMedia reviews of the prequels.

So is Maul's skin actually red and black like that or is the character painting it on? If it's natural there's a guy who was born to be evil.

Sort of:
Grievous made his first appearance in the comics in a short story in Star Wars: Visionaries called "The Eyes of Revolution". This story reveals that he was once Kaleesh general Qymaen jai Sheelal, a fierce warrior engaged in a brutal war with the rival planet Huk. Grievous has had many wives. One that he is currently married to is human Gravlyn. He boards a shuttle to take him to another battle, unaware that Dooku had planted an explosive device in it. He is mortally wounded in the resulting crash and what remains of his body is reconstructed with cybernetic limbs. Dooku then recruits him into the Separatist Army as his second-in-command.

I don't entirely understand this, but Wookieepedia says:
Like the rest of his kin, Maul was subjected, shortly after birth, to an initiation ritual during which he was immersed in a "magic" oily bath, and covered head to toe in black and red tattoos. Later stripped of his black Nightbrother markings, Maul was left solely red-skinned. Agonizing Sith tattoos were applied personally by Darth Sidious in an attempt to cleanse Maul's mind as well as demonstrating Maul's complete dedication to the dark side.

All the battles sucked in the prequels. At least with the battle in Ep3 there is some anger and desperation. And terrible lines and delivery but at least there is some emotion.
Qui gon and Darth Maul was just a cgi fuckfest.
