While I don't fully agree that they are nowhere near being finished, this statement is why I think one of them will be on the new record. I think Cold Confession is going to end up being Lightning Bolt's Gone or Speed of Sound.

The only things they really need to do to finish it though, is tighten up the vocals / lyrics and figure out the proper way to end it.

And of course, don't add any lasers.

The ending for one, that whole last vocal section beginning from "tears will be alright," or whatever it is. It's my favorite moment from a "new" PJ song in a while. The lyrics seem really strong. It's doggedly anthemic and uplifting without even trying to be. I've had it on repeat all morning.

I love Cold Confession as well, and I'm excited that there'll be a moment where that one hits me like Let it Ride did.

If the album took 4 years and they stopped and scrapped it once already it's odd that they'd be putting two 8 year old tracks on it, no?

Although he says "Cold Confession" im still going with Cold COncession. I like that better. Conceding to the fact that, this will just relationship will just be "good enough"

Parting Ways was debuted at a soundcheck in 1996. Didn't make an album until 2000. And look at all the material from the Binaural sessions.

Wow, you killed with this right here. We are our favorite producers. There's a b-side/outtake syndrome in the PJ community that has not been discussed enough. Even if we get a new song, if it's considered "part of the next record" and listened to separately, it's evaluated differently. An outtake gets special "only child" treatment. Anyway, I could go on about what you said, but you said as good as anyone could. Very well written.

I also think time between albums makes a huge impact. How does perception of the music effect how music is listened to? What if No Code didn't have a follow up for 4 years? How would it have been evaluated in year 2 or 3? Especially if it was internet era where people are posting analysis daya after day for years. Instead, we got Yield 18 months later right about when hardcore fans were jizzing themselves over Present Tense. No code was still simmering with the fanbase. It was still at a high point within it's life for the listener. It hadn't settled and wore itself out yet. We got another album pretty quickly.

Backspacer was not followed up, it got a good general reaction around here for a year or two but the simmer faded and their was nothing else for the fanbase to chew on. I think if it was followe up say in December 2010 or February 2011 people around here would be looking at it differently.

My theory is that these two didn't "fit" on Avocado, then when O'Brien heard them he said "I can't do anything with these" and discarded them. I'm trying to also determine if Ed or O'Brien is the bigger meddler in official PJ releases. McCready and Ament appear to want to release everything, with Stone being the most measured in the band.

Glad you like em Strat, I just don't think they're very good, as they stand, either of them.
Some more development and maybe letting it jam out a bit more and there'd be something.
That's where they'd be slaughtered though. In production.
They're demos. Not fully realised finished songs at all.

A great album doesn't stop being great just because the follow-up is taking too much time. If anything if it's that great to begin with the wait probably feels less long because, you know, you have a great album to listen to meanwhile.

Truth be told I like all 3 of the LB tracks.
I like these two while absolutely loving CC.

Nothing about the first 3 LB songs have me anticipating anything like these two demos being on the album.

Let It Ride....Wow!! THAT is the band that I love(d)! This shows that they can still write great stuff. Please let this song be on the new record.

To me, this says alot. "THAT is the band I love" I take as wanting to go backwards to a former time. To me, it's the same as when Ten fans were upset with No Code and they wanted the band to still be anthemic and dark. The band have been through this with alot of fans before, except much much worse.

Unemployable and Supersonic is a perfect example of the band making the point in a much sharper way. "Sharp" is the best word I can use to describe their current songwriting style. Not better or worse, just sharper in the sense the each chord progression and snare hit gets the song to a new place.

These 2 outtake songs linger on the mood and atmosphere, which is good, but they can do that in their sleep.

The only thing that feels unfinished about them is that they sound like they were a band recording of a song rather than a finished take (i.e. they're pretty unadorned). As far as composition goes, lyrics, melodies and all, they seem plenty finished.
