I for one love it. It reminds me of no code or yield era Pearl Jam when they got more introspective and I love that introspective softer Pearl Jam.
I have no idea if it’s based on his real life or a metaphor or what but way too many of these songs have lyrics that seem to be alluding to divorce/loss of long love to think that it isn’t what they are about on some level.
