After my listening experience yesterday I certainly feel stronger in my view that part of the appeal of the Beatles is the ideology of The Beatles. What they were doing at the time HAD to have been really powerful to have built the following they did? I'm not denying that. How could you? But once history becomes mythologized it changes how we view history. And people rarely recognize the mythology they are living with as mythology.

I get that some of this, maybe even a huge part of it, is just that my tastes run in a different direction, and it is simple aesthetics. But is that ALL of it? I'm not so sure. Again, the defensive reaction (and it is defensive, even if it is disguised as playful disbelief) and the intensity of it (and it can get intense) makes me think something more is at work here. (and yes, not EVERY Beatles fan, or person posting in this thread, is defensive).

my biggest regret when I post in threads like this is that it isn't helping people's opinion of Backspacer.

It is fitting that being so morbidly incorrect falls in line with your appreciation for Lightning Bolt. Not my proudest moment to draw that parallel, but if you're going to stand behind horrible music it stands to reason that you'd talk shit on mastery. You guys need an intervention.

I like LB and the Beatles. So what does that say about me?

Well, I find it amusing that so many songs are dismissed as trite or shallow or whatever, just because they came after the fact of the Beatles. The Beatles set a precedent of writing songs which, sonically, often had a happy, shamefully "child-like" (not childish) aesthetic. And, whether you love it or hate it, at least that's what Ed was trying in Backspacer. I'm not trying to say that Backspacer is as good as the Beatles, or even in the same ballpark. One is the originator of many of today's pop melodies and musical tendencies, and the other is just a great rock band wanting to have "fun". But it still intrigues me that we sometimes have so much difficulty accepting things on their own terms. Anyway, I'm going to look for that list of essential Beatles songs that someone posted, and try again with them. They deserve more of a chance than I gave them yesterday in the jumped-up, anxious state I was in.

Soma thought Oceania had 3 great songs. Not good songs mind you. Great songs. So I wouldn't worry too much about it :)

Eh... yeah, the thing is, I got called out yesterday for saying something "disingenuous", which I deserved. I'm gonna sit back and see whether this gets called out as equally disingenuous, or whether it gets left just because it's in support of the Beatles.

Your inclination to clutch my opinion so closely to your heart is both hilarious and depressing. C'mon, stip.

Well, hey, I didn't make that call. It was no doubt dead accurate, but you shouldn't live in fear.

harmless, I posted a list way back...like in the first few pages. I left tons of stuff off, but those songs I listed are all some of my favorites. It's a lot of songs to take in, and some are the kind that should be given more than a once-over. If you're sick of LB, or need a break, check some of those songs out. A few are ones you probably know, but some are deep cuts. The songs are all over the map too...from the early works to the later day stuff.

Title of the thread should have been 'So who here really likes the Beatles and isn't a complete tool about it?'

I don't think you can really get all that indignant about this when you're the one who keeps bringing up and dismissing my tastes first. I just remember the Oceania thing because I heard that album a few times and was shocked that anyone, anywhere, outside of maybe billy corgan's mom, would find things to like about it.

How can you even answer such a grammatically fucked-up question anyway?

actually some of the music on oceania was okay until Corgan opened his mouth. But this isn't really a thread about thinking the Pumpkins lost it. this is a thread about not liking the beatles.
