Just fall into a routine. Say you're gonna run Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Just start with half a mile. Then increase it by a quarter-mile ever couple of weeks. On Sundays, walk at a fast pace after you run, this will increase your endurance. Work on your endurance first, then start worrying about running faster. In other words, finish that 5K distance a few times, before really trying to push yourself with better times. If later you feel like you can add a day, start running Saturday AND Sunday. Running on back-to-back days will also increase your endurance.Simple Torture wrote:You guys are animals. My fiancée and I signed up for a 5K at the end of the summer and I've gotta basically start from scratch. Suggestions?
Buy a calendar and start writing down all your numbers. Set some goals and reward yourself. Basically, invest in your running. Go to running store and buy a $100 pair of shoes. Maybe even buy a Garmin watch. It sounds silly, but you'll probably feel like you "have to" put some effort in it now that you spent some money. I do this with my gym membership. Yeah, I could join the cheap gym, but I joined the expensive, nice one because I feel like I have to use it a bunch of times a month to justify the cost.
Try to have fun while running. I often forget to do this.
