I never read the books, but did get a little spoiled. I was 24 hours late in watching this, and I had heard the rumble from the internet and knew something was up...I then saw a photo of the king of the north, and I knew he'd be dead....the wedding was too smooth and that dude was too creepy so figured there'd be a bloodbath there.

Great episode in a great season, as predicted by those who read the books.

Well, I'm not George R.R. Martin, and suspect that no one that posts here is. I haven't read the books. My knowledge of all things Jon Snow is based on a collective 90 minutes of screen time that he has received since the start of the series. I haven't been adjudicated by a court of competent Game of Thrones jurisdiction to be a Jon Snow expert. So I can't profess to be all knowledgeable of Jon Snow. So perhaps I don't understand Jon Snow as much as others here, including you. I really just stop by here when I have a few extra minutes during the day to blow off steam and discuss a TV show that I really enjoy watching. You, however, seem to be taking this pretty seriously.

Hey man, I was just having a discussion about game of thrones and disagreements happen when you have one of those. The only thing I am talking serious about is that the show has spelled out who the character is and you said that you can see people justifying either action, when one is out of character. I didn't imply that YOU were the one arguing that either, I was just dismissing the notion that some people would without their love of redheads who get naked and talk dirty getting in the way of that assessment.

My wife is pissed. I knew it was coming and thought it was well done (other than the throat cutting - those looked fake as hell). My wife, on the other hand, said she's done with the show. She said nearly as much when she read the first book and got to Ned's beheading...and she never picked up the series again. Hopefully I can get her to watch next week and she'll ride out the shock. I thought they did a good job of the obvious foreshadowing - I think when it's heavy handed like that, it builds up the dread. The missus caught on that something was up, and asked me to spoil it three times. The last time she was pretty serious, so I told her the joke about GRRM and twitter, but didn't elaborate. Apparently I didn't soften the blow quite enough. "I don't watch shows so everyone I'm rooting for can die!"

jesus christ. :/ i recognized the rains of castamere song and understood that it was not a good sign, and for the next 5-10 minutes i was as anxious about a tv show as i have ever been. i love that a television show can do that to me. i love that no one is safe. but it still sucks to see it happen.

i read a review suggesting all the signs were there that something was afoot, so it should be fun to re-watch the season and pick out what was missed. i know for sure that bolton letting jamie lannister go without appearing to gain anything in return (you don't let jamie go with only the promise of riches), which seemed really odd given that he was a stark guy, actually WAS really odd and should have been a huge red flag. i mean, even jamie seemed surprised!

jon snow's story also took an unexpected twist. i don't know who looked more heartbroken, ygritte or jorah when that toothy dude made his dramatic entrance.
