Hurley created the flash sideways so that everybody could join up and work their stuff out and move on together. They were alive on the island and then at various points everybody died, as people tend to do.

Isn't it explicitly stated that they all "created" that place?

So, people like Ben and his father went to the island, worked for a bit, and then returned home after some nut attacked the camp and set off a nuclear bomb?

Or is the flash sideways as if the island never existed?

It's clearly not just "the plane didn't crash." Because Jack has a son and Sawyer is a cop, etc.

No, that happened on The Island and was real.

Ben's dad died on the island and Ben was still alive in season 6 post-bomb. As the flash sideways is in the afterlife it exists outside of our view of time.

The flash sideways is a purgatory style world Hurley made (presumably using his Jacob powers) for everybody to meet up in the afterlife, solve their stuff, and move on together. There's no island in the flash sideways. The season opens with the flight of 815 over the Pacific and you see the Island submerged underwater.

Correct, the flash sideways is not the "real world." I've always wondered what that means for people like the son Jack never had. Is he just like an afterlife NPC there to help Jack figure things out? That's kinda how I take it.

YT no, maybe some of that is from DVD extras, idk. Ben murdered his dad on the island, we see that happen on the show. Not made up.

As far as what you're wondering, that's exactly what you're supposed to wonder during season 6 but the finale tells us that's not what the flash sideways was. In the finale, we're told explicitly by Christian that everything on the Island happened. We're told the flash sideways occurs "after" (though there's not really time "here") everybody died. We see the ones who were ready move on together to whatever the next phase of the afterlife is that they're entering.

I love this show. Would love to be transported to this world again with new eyes. Hopefully I can convince my girlfriend to watch it with me someday
