RIP I've grown to really love Marquee Moon and Adventure over the last few years.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I saw Tom perform a solo instrumental set at the Fender Jaguar 50th Anniversary show in NYC around 2009 or so. Small club gig. The lineup was:

Tom Verlaine
Thurston Moore + Lee Renaldo
Nels Cline + some painter
J Mascis and two guys who weren’t Murph or Lou Barlow.

The other three sets were relatively more high concept for one reason or another:

Nels and the painter, playing off each other, yawn.

Dino Jr but not really, whatever.

Thurston and Lee with a whole lot of artifice cool, but not much else. I also got to hang with them a bit backstage and that was a supremely disappointing experience.

Tom just sat in a chair, had a single guitar, a couple pedals. His set was the highlight of the night and years later the thing that really stands out was how elemental and free of bullshit it all seemed. He moved from Television-esque melodic explorations to Glenn Branca walls of sound with ease. I don’t recall him looking up from his guitar once. It was sublime. He looked like death and I don’t think he hung backstage after his set at all, or at least not where I could see him. True or not, that experience cemented his position as a tortured genius in my mind.
