Definitely a weird coincidence, but the idea of Luke turning to the dark side has been around for a while--the Dark Empire comics came out in the early '90s, I think? I'm sure Abrams had heard of that storyline before.

Apparently Abrams is fond of big twists but I can't see him going here really.
Unless Luke has gone into seclusion after going to the dark side, having set up the Knights of ren initially and then regretting it and gone into hiding?

I think I'm sticking with my theory that either Kylo is vaders grandson. Via Han &leia or perhaps one of Lukes students gone to the dark side?

An order of dark side Jedi knights doesn't just pop up. They learned from someone somewhere.

I just finished the 4-issue "Shattered Empire" comic, and here's some spoilers/speculation on how it might connect to the new film:

Takes place in the months following the Battle of Endor, and gives each of our leads something to do: Han is leading rebel strike forces against Imperial strongholds; Leia is going on diplomatic missions; and Luke is on a secret mission to recover pieces of the force-sensitive tree that grew at the center of the Jedi Temple. Han's story seems the most boring, but he's helped on his missions by Kes Dameron (duh-duh-duh!). Leia's missions reveal that the Emperor had contingency plans in place in case of his demise, which helps explain how some the Imperial remnant held together (also might give a clue as to what the First Order is up to in TFA). Luke's helped on his mission by Shara Bey (aka Mrs. Dameron), and its goal certainly suggests that he's looking to start a new Jedi Temple, or at least to repair the order. He gives one piece of the Jedi tree to Shara, and the implication is that he "felt" something--shirtly afterwards, Shara and hubby retire to Yavin 4 to raise their son (this all lends credence to the theory that Poe is somehow Force-sensetive). Not sure how much of this will be referenced/implied in the movie; I hated how there were characters and plotlines in the prequels that you needed comics to understand, so hopefully not much and it'll just add color.

No one is talking about it, but the real answer to all this mystery has something to do with C-3PO's red arm.
