Do you adopt this attitude to sexual assault and intimate partner violence stats? People seem to acknowledge that the number of incidences is higher than reported. Just do the same with any crime statistic, especially in areas where they have gone soft on prosecution.
No one I know reports property crime here if they are not doing an insurance claim. No one does an insurance claim unless there was a very large loss because their insurance rates will go up. It’s just not worth the time when you know the perpetrator, even if caught will just be let to go on their merry way.
This is exactly why I clarified above that I’m referring to Bammer’s argument about unreported theft at businesses. We all understand that there are violent crimes/assaults that go unreported for a variety of reasons. I’m not a victim blamer. These guys are saying a business owner gets robbed, and does nothing for either cynical reasons or out of frustration. McP pointed out that they’re shooting themselves in the foot. Contrary to what Verb says, filing a police report is not a big deal. I’ve had to do it at work for both theft and vandalism. Took about 10 min. Obviously this is not the same as, for example, a young woman too afraid to come forward after being assaulted.

Huh, my city says the following:
Online reporting is easy, quick and convenient. The report can be submitted from any computer with internet access, including a kiosk in the police station's lobby. There is no need to wait for an available police officer, and police officers will be able to remain on patrol. A copy of your report will be emailed to you for free.
Why don't they just come out and tell you they don't give a shit?
So which is it? You don't like the approach? Or, it's hard? Because I think we've answered both of these gripes and yet here you stand, goalpost on your shoulder.

I guess the right thing to do is to report to the lobby kiosk and initiate the wheels of justice.

One small step for Verb, one giant leap for Verb's neighbors' kids.

My city charges you $20 for a copy of a police report that you can generally only submit online. They don't even bother coming out to tell you they don't give a shit.

In the event of a surge of unpoliced property damage to local businesses, owners might reasonably feel compelled to find new surroundings. In that case, time will prove the truth of the problem because places like Seattle will experience a dearth of storefront businesses.
But if they don’t report it *and* they remain in place, then we’re right back to “it’s a nightmare of a problem that I need you to believe is happening because it’s ruining my life, but also I can’t be bothered to demonstrate it.”

There are other options here, like "I need to pay for my kid's chemo so I'll keep going despite the violence". Or "I'm terrified of appearing *ist so I will stay"

Absolutely. That's true for an individual. But we're talking about a city. Even, say, a 15% increase in storefront businesses closing up over the previous year would be stunning and noticeable.
And I'm not arguing that they *should* leave (verb is the one who suggested they might prefer to). I'm saying that it is absurd to argue that there is a secret, massive uptick in destructive crimes towards businesses, that there's no way to prove it exists because the people being victimized can't be bothered to document or react to it, but that it warrants a complete course correction on implemented policies because (apocryphal story goes here).
I don't want any police reform that demonstrably does harm enacted. I don't give a shit if someone wants to be snarky about that statement; it's true. But you have to be able to demonstrate a problem if you want the community to feel the need to fix the problem. I don't understand the attitude of "no, I shouldn't have to."
As far as I'm concerned, if the crime numbers coming out of Seattle, or Baltimore, or Lincoln, Nebraska are skewed low by a lack of reporting, then the problem is in the lack of reporting.
On top of all of that, reported crime statistics don't just influence public opinion or policy....they also impact in how police departments deploy the resources they have. Not reporting that your window got smashed isn't just a great way to prevent the community from recognizing a problematic trend...it's a good way to see fewer patrols in your area.

Car stolen and vandalized beyond repair, my first year out of college. My family owned and staffed a restaurant in South Dakota when I was growing up, and had to rebuild after some drunks trying to steal equipment burned it halfway into the ground.
But it's inconsequential, because no answer I might give you would change the fact that it is naive to think that major public attitude or policy changes will or should occur in the absence of awareness or evidence. Before your community can care that your livelihood was harmed, you have to make them aware that your livelihood was harmed.
What's the preventer on reporting these crimes? $20, motivation, and time? Ok, so if that's not worth it (?!?) then find another way to advocate for yourself. Wanting society to fix your problem without any effort on your part...even to self-advocate or demonstrate cause for concern...feels a bit entitlement to me.
Unless they are given a reason to believe that there is a completely-undocumented spike in property crimes,
people aren't going to believe that there's a completely-undocumented spike in property crimes. That's as rational as rational gets. They'll work with the numbers that exist to be seen, which for now is a 1% increase in property crimes in Seattle....and a 36% decrease in Baltimore, post-reforms.

I had some kids cut through my yard and kick through a portion of fencing. The fence was junk and has since been removed completely. The cops actually found out who did it because I think they also threw a rock at my neighbors garage and were seen doing that. A cop stopped by my office and asked what I wanted to do. I decided to do nothing, other than having the kids stop by to say sorry. Why go through all the trouble to not only file the police report but then see through pressing charges, turning in shit for restitution, ect? More times than not you don't see a dime back from the offender anyway, regardless of what the court orders. I also could have made myself a target for future property damage by making a big deal out of it.
There are all kinds of reasons why people don't feel like reporting this type of shit.

After historically deadly 2020, Atlanta homicides are up nearly 60% in 2021
…..
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has referred to the spike in violence as a “COVID crime wave,” but the city’s death toll continues to mount as more Georgians get vaccinated and life returns to normal. As of June, Atlanta’s murders are up and shootings have increased by 40%, according to the latest data. Meanwhile, overall arrests are down by about 43% as Atlanta’s police force remains more than 400 officers under its authorized level.
More than 200 officers quit the force in 2020, many after criminal charges were filed against the two involved in the deadly shooting of Rayshard Brooks and other officers who used their Tasers on two college students during last summer’s protests downtown. Another 75 Atlanta police officers have left since the start of the year, records show.
But department leaders say morale is stabilizing and that they plan to hire 250 new officers in the next fiscal year beginning July 1.
….
Perfect opportunity to hire social workers and instead they are focusing on more inexperienced cops.
