Not to be "that guy," but I had a similar thought when I noticed he hasn't popped up in any trailers (but he is on the poster). Maybe the whole adventure is to recover a hwrd drive Darth Vader installed in him as a kid? Hey, did you remember that Darth Vader built C-3PO? WEREN'T THE PREQUELS AWESOME??M?

Doesn't it seem cripplingly uncreative that the new villain is just a new Darth Vader and the new protagonist seems to be another kid from Tattooine who, presumably, longs for adventure?

Sure.

But again, Star Wars wasn't all that innovative in and of itself originally, either. It was the spectacle and the creative gadgets and whatnot that made it unique.

And now Disney, Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams have the Prequels to overcome as well. It makes perfect sense to set a tone that's as familiar to the original as the original was to Joseph Campbell and the countless heroes journey stories that came before.

Something about those archetypes and those formulaic stories resonate with the human psyche.

Also, I'm not comfortable calling Adam Driver "a new Darth Vader" just yet. Let's get some details and context before we try to slap on those kinds of labels and accusations.

Adam Driver is a black-clad, red-saber-wielding villain with a distorted voice who is trying to "finish what [Vader] started." In other words, he wants to become the new Vader. Seems pretty clear, unless the trailer is taking that line out of context.

We don't know what "finish what you started" means exactly though. Is he talking about finishing killing off all the Jedi? Is he talking about ruling the entire galaxy? Is he talking about killing Luke specifically? Is he talking about forming an Empire? Is he talking about revitalizing the Sith? Some of these goals could make him more like a Palpatine figure than a Vader.

The outfit and the color of lightsaber seems like fetishizing, like hero-worship based on what we know. From a storytelling standpoint I think that's actually really cool and certainly not cripplingly uncreative. Especially when you couple all of this with the inspiration and intent of the original, and the archetypes of Joseph Campbell. Again, it makes a lot of sense and hopefully will be a great springboard back into a rich world.

I don't know. I'm just saying maybe there's more than meets the eye. But even if there isn't, as long as the character is engaging, who cares? Why is it not cripplingly uncreative to reboot an old film, but it is to show a similar type villain? As long as it's well done, who gives a shit?

You might be right. I just have no faith in this production or the people behind it, so I'm assuming the worst at this point. This character broadcasts laziness from what I've seen so far. But, again, I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah, I get that.

My imagination might be writing something that's better than what we actually get. But, on the surface, I really love the idea of someone who collects old Jedi & Sith relics and worships Vader. I love the idea of a villain who wants to emulate all of what he believes Vader was. It's so culty and twisted. We'll see where they take all of that, but I think the concept is cool. Or has the potential to be, at least.

Basically, this movie's villain is a fanboy.
