no reviews have talked about the apparent instrumental segue between WFS and... I can't remember, but it feels like those are so rare for PJ to do (since Yield and Vitalogy?) I'd have mentioned it

That's how I read it too. It's dead in the middle, not THE epitome track.

Interesting turn of phrase..very on the nose...Usually, when I hear "centerpiece" with regard to an album track, the connotation is typically referring to the emotional core or the apex.

I thought a segue happened when songs followed each other straight up without a pause, like Parabol into Parabola on Lateralus.
Interludes or intermissions is what I thought was the name for those too-short-or-weird-to-be-a-song pieces. Vitalogy seems full of them, and it made me love the album even more thanks to their presence.

I understand what you mean when one song segues directly into another, but, I would call something like the Tool example "gapless playback." Others may feel differently.

yeah those are the words I was looking for more than "segue" - although technically a segue is just a passage from one thing to another
