I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

The Road is a transcendent novel. The last few pages -- and the final paragraph in particular -- are perfect. Some of the best writing I've had the pleasure to experience. I finally saw the movie a few years ago and didn't care much for it. A couple of scenes were good.

No Country is great, just watched it the other day and it was fantastic. And Lewellyn isn't stupid, almost all of his actions can be traced to aspects of his character that are realistic and true to the world he lives in.
The Road is IMO kind of a minor McCarthy work, his bests are Blood Meridian and the Border Trilogy, which are all fantastic and achingly romantic.

Re: Post Random Movie-Related Thoughts You Have
The entire movie hinges upon him bringing water to a man that any even remotely intelligent person on earth would know is long dead. That is idiotic. Such a dumb fucking thing to link to him having a guilty conscience. Seriously it’s maybe the single stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in a movie. Goddammit now I’m pissed offOrpheus wrote:No Country is great, just watched it the other day and it was fantastic. Re: Post Random Movie-Related Thoughts You Have
He is aware that it's a dumb thing to do, and even says it! He's self aware about the whole thing. So why does he do it? I believe this is the purpose of his conversation with the border guard. They talk about being in Vietnam and it's obvious he saw some horrible things. It's likely he saw a friend of his gutshot and dying of thirst, just like the guy in the truck. Of course he knows the guy is dead, but his past and his character as a human makes him go anyway. I think this makes him a better and more interesting character, and a good foil to Chigurgh, who would obviously never do something like that.
Also, on a meta level, people generally do stupid things a lot to drive plots forward. Would 75% of horror movies exist without "stupid" characters? Hell, the entire Alien franchise begins with someone sticking their head in a fucking yawning egg! But they're great movies. It's almost impossible to do narrative things like keeping characters in the same place without them occasionally making stupid decisions driven by their character.

There are absolutely terrible excuses for this godawful, moronic plot contrivance, Nate. Being aware of something being stupid doesn't make it not stupid. Linking it to extremely simplistic character motivations doesn't make it not stupid. Other movies having stupid characters doesn't make it not stupid.Orpheus wrote:He is aware that it's a dumb thing to do, and even says it! He's self aware about the whole thing. So why does he do it?
