Which is a shame. Those movies are singular gems. I'm so glad we have them.
Good morning, LV. I trust this day finds you well

Exactly. God forbid we allow idiosyncrasy and weirdness into this universe.

Never say never Stip.
Just wait.

Of course SW was already a big franchise juggernaut, but im guessing Disney will fuck everything up by adding more and more and more and more ...MOAR TOYS, MOAR RIDES, JUST BUY THEM.
VG, Star Wars was already the platonic form of the franchise juggernaut. It literally invented the concept when it was exclusively owned by Lucas. And offensive tie ins were always something to just ignore

Im not sure you will be able to ignore it when its Disney trying to sell it to you...I mean not you, but your kids.

Im sure it will suck, as it did with my parents.

I understand your general concern, VG, but Star Wars is literally (yes, literally) the most absurd example to choose to make this point. What you describe is its core DNA, and has been for about 40 years

Stip i get that...But to choose to think they are treating the new saga with a different idea, by not cramming new characters just to sell toys or books is obtuse.
My general concern with Disney is more profound than just the SW franchise.

That's just their business though. To make money via endless toys and merch and products.

Thankfully and they seem to be navigating this with aplomb, in their own films and marvel films and Star Wars, they know that a quality and consistently worthwhile flagship product is key to that. They aren't churning out crap and hoping for a windfall.

my point is that, worst case scenario, they are treating it EXACTLY the same as the OT, and that worked out ok.

There are so many franchises right now, the marketplace so crowded, that good storytelling is the best way to ensure your toys sell

Except that they are churning out crap endlessly. And they have a stranglehold on pop culture. They are damaging culture in multiple ways.

Exactly this.

They grabbed your beloved figures of the past and re selling them to you and your kids. They are selling SW in Marvel movies for christ sake.
Listen guys, im exited about this movie...its the first we well see Luke. I dont even think TFA was that bad...but its just tiresome to see people buying a toy from a character that doesnt quite exist in a movie just because the market says so.

A guy i trust has this thing about the greatest films of all time are the ones that kill Hollywoods creativity cos when a game changer like Star Wars comes along everyone tries to imitate that, from success down to what kinda camera techniques are used and that stops innovation across the film making spectrum

He's not wrong. But he forgets that those kinds of films also inspire many others to evolve and improve the medium also.

Star Wars / Disney aren't ruining anything. They're an ingrained and treasured part of modern culture.

If you're sitting somewhere and thinking Star Wars is ruining your culture, you have other more serious problems. Get up and make a film that will speak to your culture.

A tiny tiny tiny percentage like less than 1% of people do this for themselves.
And nobody especially Disney is saying you have to buy anything. You have a choice. You seem to be arguing that we don't.

I'm pretty thankful that my kids don't seem all that interested in SW.

Yes, exactly.
And its getting worse and worse.

Ey, you can still enjoy their films...i know i sometimes do, but its getting out of control and people dont seem to mind. Maybe its because, in these days, culture just dont quite matter like it used to, there is so much content that everything seems superfluous. And then you have this old franchises coming back with 3 movies per yer, tons of merchandise, comic books and books and clothes and rides...and i wonder where is my choice?
Pretty much every movie thats been in the theatres are from disney from 3 or 4 different franchises.

Anyway guys, is fine if you dont see it or dont care or maybe im wrong. It doesnt matter because its already happening.

It's a peculiar part of globalisation and corporate entity culture to be annoyed with. It's just entertainment. As long as its quality I'm happy.

I'm a massive fan. Even if I was financially able to collect and buy all the stuff I wouldn't. It's just stuff. I tune it out. Doesn't speak to me.

139 days until the last Jedi hits cinemas.

That speaks to me :)
