Not like this Stip. At all. Th cultural landscape is quite different from 15 years ago...and the fact that just one studio owns everything is pretty gruesome to me.

other than the consolidation of ownership, which is new, it is identical - in terms of how intellectual property is commodified and the possibility of commidification driving the sponsership of art. maybe other parts of the world are catching up to the way the US has been since OT star wars changed the game.

But in the end this doesnt prevent good storytelling, and it can also enable good storytelling on a scale not otherwise possible

it can certainly produce terrible storytelling as well. it depends on the people involved. but from my vantage the only studio that seems to not be doing as well as they might (creatively) is Pixar

true, but its a seperate conversation from the movie as vehicle for merchandizing as something insidious and NEW

Trying to make the mental jump from the fact that there's endless merchandising to the films or art created are rendered worthless or invalid as works worthy of respect and failing. And falling into the gap.

I'm on a Terry Pratchett book marathon and everything is hilarious all of a sudden if you just look at it the right way. Too bad my posting can't reach his level despite my efforts.

I never understood this. If you don't like something, just don't take part. I'm not a big comic book movie guy. I just ignore it mostly. If it bothers you just leave it behind you. We can't fix it to how we want it to be. So complaining about it doesn't achieve anything really. Although that said lucasfilm does listen. But you can't stop the commodifying of something you love like Star Wars. It was about that to begin with. Accept it. Or don't. We can't change it though.

What im trying to say is that im worried about this big huge corporation taking what we love and making it even bigger than it was...in this case popular art form like the marvel superheroes, star wars or pixar.
