Evil Empire is hands down one of the best sounding albums I’ve ever heard

Whoa. Just listened to a few tracks each from EE and BOLA, and something else jumped out at me that I had never noticed before: the stereo spread on the drums is super narrow. Toms and cymbals all in the middle of the mix, rather than off to the sides. Allows the bass guitar FX to feel larger, and then they have Morello’s multi-tracked guitars bookending they mixes on the left and right.

Pretty atypical choices here, but it definitely contributes to the band sounding like a small, right powder keg, rather than a massive wall of sound.

when i saw prophets of rage a couple years ago it was a tiny venue and i was like 20 feet away on morello's side and could see his sound guy right there - basically the Xth member of the band. him and morello were very tight, a lot of looks and little chatter and stuff. it sounded so good. a lot of knowledge going on between those two

they played like 8 rage songs. my calves and neck were toast the next day

RATM came out when I was hating the Machine more than I've ever hated the Machine in my life. I listened to that album until I could rap the whole album a Capella. It was intertwined with the meat of my brain.

I got subsequently more comfortable with the Machine as time went on. No matter what they did, they could never hit me the same way.

Renegades pushed up, b/c that's just a fucking fun album.

I could see myself swapping the first two if the mood struck me, but BoLA is clearly the worst of the three.
