Man. To me, punk is such a powerful driving force, a total distillation and exacerbation of what made rock and roll exciting to begin with. Melody, energy, aggression and ingenuity. To my ears, the most fruitful melting pot in all of popular music-- particularly that early period.

Where to start.

Well, I'll start by just being as frank as I can think to be: I was hoping for something other than a straightforward rock song.

I realize Pearl Jam are a rock band, and that to a certain extent, straightforward rock songs are what they do. But you asked me what I was hoping for, and this is my honest answer. I'm just tired of this type of song. It doesn't necessarily sound like any one song in their catalog, and yet, if someone asked me to think up in my mind what "modern Pearl Jam" sounds like, this is pretty much the exact thing I'd think up. So, in that regard, I guess the one simple thing I'd hoped for is that Pearl Jam would transcend my expectations. It's been a long time since they've transcended my expectations. I miss them transcending my expectations.


(On that same note, I've reached my breaking point with Ed's redundant lyrical themes and bullshit new age platitudes. "Self-realized and metaphysically redeemed"--sounds like he's about one unthought away from commissioning Sylvia Browne to write the liner notes to his next solo album, which will be packaged just like "No Code" only using tarot cards instead of Polaroids.)

Just to be clear, I didn't mean to mention those as examples of "the best punk bands" or "the most representative punk bands" or anything, just a few random names that popped into my brain when I thought about punk bands I really like. Your point about a lack of darkness and pointless aggression is a good one, but then, I just view it as really good pop music. To me, the tidal wave of innovative balls-to-the-wall rock music-- pumped-up youth anthems that combine Phil Spector girl-group melodies with Pete Townshend guitar aggression-- has never been equalled in pop music, and it to my eyes and ears it set the bar for the current indie scene, which draws on a lot of those influences as well. I've expressed that I enjoy several of your music recommendations, but I guess this is one genre where we don't see eye to eye. I fucking love punk music. It's great.
