I don’t think after 20+ years into that post apocalypse many people are thinking about saving humanity. Life has become survival for you and those you care about.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Thought about that. I would expect other people to sacrifice their child to save humanity potentially and so I also expect it for myself

Any parent would have and Wease explained it quite well on the previous page. "We think if we cut out your kid's brain and extract fungus that we magically know is there, we will be able to use the equipment in this filthy hospital to safely replicate it, even though no one in the world is biologically identical to her and we have no idea what will happen once it's out, and save the world... and uhhh totally not abuse that power to take over"

Is anyone going to point out that Joel isn't her dad but a guy who's only known her for a few months and violates her trust to selfishly use her as a stand-in for his actual daughter

kind of a weird point there, I would have thought you would be more down with the concept of a “chosen family”, and well kids do get adopted and those parents do love them. Maybe the response could be why do you think a traumatized child can consent to a fatal medical experiment?

He was talking to me!

In my view Joel is not Ellie's adoptive parent either, though he manipulates her pretty monstruously into that position

Joel’s a psycho and also not very intelligent. There are other ways to save her besides mowing everyone down, but this show is based on a video game, so here we are. This last point is why the show will never be great - it should use the game as inspiration for the world creation and main plot points, otherwise deviate greatly, but it doesn’t.
